This is absolutely HUGE!!!
Have you ever thought about how hard is for an album like "Loose" (that already sold more than 7,1 million copies worlwide) to stay in the top for so long and still kicking the charts with its 5th single? "Do it" is joining to the success of the previous singles "Promiscuous", "Maneater", "Say it right" and "All good things(come to and end)".
Let me just remind you that "Say it right" is the massive number 1 single of the year so far, officially by Mediatraffic, and experts say that Rihanna's "Umbrella" won't be already able to get "Say it right", becoming the number 2 single.
The release of "Do it" had some turbulence because, for some reasons, the other two singles "Te busque" and "In God's hands" were released at the time, confusing some of the radio airplayers, specially in Europe. However, and despite the success of "Te busque" in some countries (the album has been having so much credit by all the experts and Nelly Furtado's fans that even a spanish and no-video song reached top 10 in some countries), "Do it" started to take the radios in Europe and North America, making impossible to resist to its fresh and cool summer vibe. "Do it" finally gets the number 1 spot in the most influential music program in the world: MTV America's TRL.
This is one the most incredible run for an album ever. "Loose" was 13th album best selling album of 2006 worldwide, and by now, it is the best selling album of 2007. It spend endless weeks in the top spot in so many countries and it became multi-platinum (and we're talking about 3x, 4x and 5x Platinum). It won't probably keep the number 1 in top albums, because of the release of the new Linkin Park's album. It is although expected that "Loose" will keep a place in the top 3 by the end of the year (and maybe the number 1 in the Top Europe Albums of 2007).
Finally, Nelly Furtado stands up as the best selling female artist right now. When an album sells almost 7,2 million albums worlwide nowadays, it is considered a massive success. And just to keep you closer to this fact, let's just say that the over-the-top previous Madonna's album "Confessions of a dancefloor" sold 7,5 million. Since there's a big chance for "Loose" to reach the 7,5 million mark by the end of the year, you can see what we're talking about.
Nelly Furtado is performing the MTV VMA's and nominated for the best female artist. It would be very fair if this artist received her first VMA. Another question: how hard is for an artist to be so huge for two consecutive years? Well, I guess it happens when this artist reinvented herself although keeping her same flavour or becoming original keeping her same unique style. Nelly Furtado is so versatile and so pure in stage that it turns very difficult not to like her. And she's special in the fact that she stands for her music. She is not in the tabloids, she doesn't play with another subjects besides her professional stuff and she has that particular and kinda exotic attitude that establish a considerable distance for any other artists. She is like no other.
“Do it” is just starting now. It will probably open the door for a 6th American single. The album, now considered as one of the best pop albums of the millennium, probably will keep Nelly Furtado in the radios for the next months. She’s just on and on!
