It could be that he doesn't fit the image of "bro country" that is popular right now. To country audiences (some of who are not very progressive people) he might be as seen as just some pretty boy, regardless of the fact that he's extremely talented.

See if he released his music THIS year, the time when Country radio is actually wanting more of music Hunter releases he could do well. 2014 pretty much was the year bro-country peaked. Looking at radio right now the bro-country songs are being swiped off the playlists of many country radio stations.
