What I like to do is to not eat or workout an hour before bed. And also no computers or TVs 2 (!) hours before bed. Read a book instead, it'll get you sleepy.
Gradually dim your lights as it gets later because it'll get your mind in the state of going to sleep. If you absolutely must have something before bed, warm milk (or water) is fine, but no actual eating.
Going to sleep earlier = waking up earlier. I wake myself up at 5:30am every day (I need to because of work) and I feel great. I can even go to bed pretty late if I NEED to but I never make it a habit because it'll then throw off your schedule. If you know how many hours of sleep you need without feeling tired (I only need 4) then you can try to adjust accordingly so the time you want to wake up, make sure you get the proper number of hours you need of sleep.
With me I can go to sleep at 1am and be fine
