Wrong. It's a sporting event and millions of fans will pile in at the beginning, get bored around halfway through and if it isn't decided by then it'll pick up hugely and be most viewed at the ending. The middle of most tv shows experience drops in ratings more easily because casual fans tune out.

The average for the entire game may be a few million lower than the 12 minute half-time, but that takes in a ton of EXTREMES (i.e. all the low, low ratings from mid-game) into count.
