Because the artist is irrelevant, or to the wider public at least. If a new song is announced, as new Katy or Gaga, there's an instant reaction.
It could be turning the volume up, turning the radio off, etc. When its an unknown like Carly or Robin, they don't care as actively for them so if its catchy, they like it then they'll buy it.
Simples.
I remember I used to stan so hard for them. Where did they go?
