They were suppose to film last year, Channing had his hair ready for shooting and Fox halted it to do rewrites so they could cut the budget after seeing Deadpool scalping the BO.
Everyone wants to see him as part as the core team. Fox is going to continue to destory the Franchise. Marvel listens to fans, that's why they do so well.

3 x men movies in one year seems unlikely, I hope the main X men films don't suffer a push back because of Gambit
Deadpool 2 or Gambit is suppose to come out later in 2017. Fox has an open X-Men movie spot for fall 2017. Deadpool 2 and New Mutants for 2018, I think. Kinberg hasn't even written X-Men yet.

I read that production will be around the same as before, so visuals should be easy to do. I think they are seeing who should get that 2017 date between Gambit and Deadpool
I can seem them popping Deadpool's production budget closer to $90-100M this time around which is still less than half of what a standard X-Men movie would cost. Wolverine III and that are nice buffers in case Gambit bombs.
They need to come HARD with the next team movie. Sansa will be at her peak with the end of GoT coming for Winter 2018 most likely so cashing in on her for a summer movie would be great. It's pretty clear from Apoc that's where they're likely going with the next team flick.

So here for Jean Grey being the focus of the next set of 3 films, its 20 years late, but Sophie will do a great job.
