Except they are not. The bodyguard sold alot but Mariah carey has two albums that sold over 30M. Her biggest being music box. Madonna and Mariah are closer actually.

I can gather a list of tons of artists who had a hit 7th album.

You asked for 20 I gave you 20. I based these on US sales, if I included WW FF would be demolished. There's a reason why they are called legends, its because they had longevity.
|
If you have to list albums from released in a different decade, different genres and arguably listening those artists worst albums then the reach is too much and not worth it.
People aren't called legends because they have longevity. Longevity is a factor and many people have longevity are not legends.
Britney is a legend and longevity is a small part of it. At least act like you know what you are talking about.

I'll give her the benefit of the doubt. When I was looking for album The Rolling Stones and Elvis including a few other had "flop" 7th album, but they did have subsequent hit albums. That's all she needs an album that can sell over 2x platinum years into her career. People like to compare Britney to Madonna and Janet, but they had major hit release during their 7th era. Like I said Britney's laziness will ruin her career, she's still a new artist in the big picture.
|
That's the dumbest logic. She won't have a flop album but what's with album #10.
She's been in the industry for over 15 years so why would she be considered a new artist. If anything people are JUST starting to understand that she is an icon and pop music legend over the past couple of years

|
No matter how you slice it all pop stars are based on looks. An artist like Mariah carey has to be in shape in order to potentially sell records as much as an artist like JLO.

|
You're comparisons are so off. It reminds me of the fans that talk about how Rihanna can sell 5M singles in comparison to others that have been around way longer. There's no logic

|
THere's only one way she will sell like that again and we don't want that to happen (see MJ and Whitney).
I'd be happy with a 2x platinum album but as long as it sells plaitinum and not just ships it then I'm fine.

|
I don't recall Beyonce having great sales over the past two years. Pink is just steady. She steadily sells 1-2M but she's never sold 14x platinum and 10x platinum. Her best was 5x platinum and the rest have gone platinum and 2x platinum. It's not difficult to be consistent when sales are not that high...certainly not great.

Most of her contemporaries reach 2X Platinum at most, and that is something that I'd hope she can achieve, and there IS a possibility of that happening. But upwards of 3M is just a no. Unless she does some elaborate re-release or bundle of some kind.

YASS btch go in and let lamestperson 12 have on dat azz. I remember when Kesha was supposed to be the new Britney. Jessica Simpson was going to take over her spot too. I mean it really isn't difficult to get to 7 albums unless you are Rihanna and put out an album every year.
You make a good point about the hype because her 8th album is anticipated and that's good.
The fact she can compete with the young girls in social media followers and get as much press as them, topping Forbes in terms of female artists, etc. after 15 years in the game is incredible. This is a different time than when Madonna/Janet, and especially the damn Rolling Stones. This entire century is full of fickle buyers and rapidly declining music sales. You have psychotic expectations to think she will just change the industry back to when you could come back from 2 million sellers then jump to 15 million selling album.
Go in btch. The industry today is a catch 22. On one hand, it's much easier to be accessible and relatable and people want to like you more as opposed to the old days where you could be difficult and as long as you were "genius" you could get away with it. On the other hand, it's much easier to be overexposed and people can just use youtube or illegal ways to listen to your music. You don't have to go to a show, buy an album etc to see the Britney brand as much as you want.
He's just trolling for attention but unlike the other ones at least this is a better debate.
It's a blessing that we can have ADELE have a breakout smash or Justin come back to music, otherwise you'd have the No. 1 album of the year selling ~1.5 million or something ridiculous like that. Britney's name and power cannot shift the times. It's too deep in her career for a reinvention, she is solidified to the people and it should not be seen as a failure if she cannot reach 2 million albums in the US, since no one (even the HOTTEST stars of today) else is doing it. Britney in her time of being the best of the best was pushing units like hot cakes. Rihanna, Katy, Gaga, have to either discount heavily or take 2-3 years to reach an admirable amount of album units.
Yeah, the only thing at this point is to evolve musically. Imagine Britney trying to reinvent herself and become a country or a rock or a folk artist. At this point, it's clear she is a pure pop artist one of the few that are purely pop. Not pop/rock, not urban pop, not country pop but pop. It's part of her magic as it is incredibly difficult to be a pure pop artist and survive
But she can easily win back sales Circus-style if she puts some pep in her step on stage and impress folks that she's worthy of an album purchase. That includes the music being digestible by a general audience, and not geared to folks who buy "I Wanna Go"-type songs via iTunes. But that clearly won't be a problem with the team of producers right now. The rhythmic-sound for Britney always pushes units ("Me Against the Music"/"Toxic", "Gimme More", "Womanizer"/"Circus", etc.). Mix it with stage presence and being alive during interviews, she will wow.
I respect FF for what it was dubstep/dance pop music. What i don't understand is how so many of her fans don't understand the Britney magic.
Britney is never going to be a timeless artist because timeless music went out back in the mid 90s. There are some artist that make timeless music and she has a handful of timeless songs however part of what makes Britney pop is that she is a pure pop artist that represents making a big pop culture statement at different times. She represents pop music in a snapshot in time kind of way. Musically, she is smart enough to shift her sound with the times. In some instances she sets trends. In other instances, she follows yet still makes the biggest impact. People remember her performances, her videos, her songs and where Britney the brand was at in that moment and even where they were at in their lives.
Image wise, they took a teenage girl at the perfect age (on the edge of seventeen) that appealed to kids since she was young enough to appeal to them and teenagers and young adults since she was old enough to appeal to them as well. Marry that with her continual shifts in music to stay current and show her versatility and longevity and you get Britney.
Britney will always remain current because as she said in 1999 the key is to make music the audience wants to hear. She will always makes music that fits pop culture in that moment and will infuse more of her personal standpoints more and more in her career.
The blueprint has been designed and implemented and it was always the plan for her to evolve musically in her 30s when she couldn't get away with the generic mindless but catchy pop songs.
Again, FF was the last time she could get away with it and she still was successful. No way, will she ever go FF 2.0.
Also Britney loves doing music and performing. As whats-his-face revealed about "Hold It Against Me" choreography, she just doesn't feel comfortable doing the moves most of you dream she could do like she was 19 years old. She will be ****ing 32 years old this year. I don't care if J. Lo can look like she's having a seizure jumping around or if Beyonce has mastered weaveography, they're different women. You guys write it off as lazy, but she's had two children, back to back, a serious mental breakdown -- in front of the entire world. But oh, she better get out there and dance like she did when she was a teenager. Ungrateful people.
Girl go in. But yes, although i see her point because most of her choreography in her early years was suggestive and sexual which bites her in the azz now. I still think she can do more hip hop dance moves. If she could pull of even mannequin rehearsal moves I'd be fine.
She just needs to get back into shoes that don't feel like heels. I remember when she did a special for the onyx hotel tour she praised certain heels that were easy to dance in and didnt feel like heels. She needs that or get back to the regular shoes
Let her try to please those who want that, you'll end up with more broken knees or something worse to top Gaga's hips.
All she needs is the spark like during Circus Tour for me and some modern choreography. Not psychotic "HIAM"-choreo or whoever the **** choreograped the Fat Female Tour with hand/walkography. Very boring, they limited her.
This is just people using the Femme Fatale era as a blueprint of like her entire career or something. That was obviously a rushed affair/misguided and unplanned, literally the ONLY time in her career an era has been so messy. Keep comparing everything to that ONE moment, of course all you have is negative things to say.
LOL even Blackout was cleaner than FF. Well, I think they realized that FF was the last time they could pull that off. If Britney had it her way, she'd have more he about to lose me 90s throwback songs but dubstep was a more powerful avenue.
Britney won't fail us with 8, I know this.
Sorry for the rant.

I can't even wait so I'm going to bold my responses. Rico better werque.

And Janet's first few albums were flops.
|
Yeah, people were over her at the sex era and wanted to call her albums flops in the beginning of the 90s.

A good half are from the 80s-90s when sales were good (some even reaching back into the 60s/70s). And that Eagles album is only 7x Platinum because its a double disc, it didn't sell 7 million copies. They'd also been on hiatus for like since 1979, their fans were hungry as ****. And then Michael's "Bad"? Coming off "Thriller" his follow-up had to be successful. And funnily enough, those sales were seen as atrocious for him.
Exactly, he used some poor examples. Bad the album that only achieved a 3rd of Thriller's sales.
Rainbow by Mariah carey...one of her worst albums.
It's literally illogical to compare Britney to the people on that list. Even if she was in tip top shape and delivered the perfect era, she still couldn't move those type of numbers in 2011-12. That was an "i spit on haters." type of post, just to make Britney look bad. Not for sake of truly backing up the argument at hand.
|
Yeah, I appreciate this good debate but coolest person doesn't have much credibility after he threaded Ooh la la as being the 3rd biggest soundtrack song for kids just to have other bases clobber him with a handful of songs like Miley cyrus and other going against his claims.
That type of stuff should be kept in the base but he let the crazy out of the bag just for some fame and notoriety and controversy and got burnt.

That doesn't mean that she should be complacent, but... You know, this record doesn't have to be a stressful one.
|
I think she will do fine and i actually think that this Vegas thing will actually prolong the era.
I could see them handling the marketing different and the fact that she is contributing more to this album will probably make it more possible for the era to have more life. i really think that she didn't want to promote FF because she didn't stand behind it as it wasn't her original concept.

I agree. This is the first album in 10 years where Britney is at a more stable place. Blackout was released in the midst of her public image being destroyed, her losing custody of her children, a year after a messy divorce with long-term effects that were still present at the time, media headlines that were not flattering at all, and the 2007 VMA's, of course. Add that in to no radio support, and we should be so lucky she still sold well.
Good points.
Circus was done, as Rico said, to reinvigorate her public image and boost up her profile again. It NEEDED to be done, no doubt about it, so it's not like I regret the record [fact is, I love it!] but it definitely had zero input from Britney. I mean, when it sinks in that she released in less than a YEAR after she was institutionalized, it's ****ing incredible to even think that they finished the album in the first place.
Good points
Femme Fatale, well, y'all know how that went down.
This is the first time where I feel like she isn't being pressured. Where she just will do what she wants with her work and promote it accordingly. I'm glad. That's why I REALLY have a good feeling about this album and how it will be received by the fans and critics.
|
Yeah, this era is also do or die and it seems like EVERYONE in her camp knows that she has to step it up. She can't just give baby steps but she needs to evolve in order to finish this decade out with 3 more platinum albums before bowing out gracefully. I'm sure they've caught wind of declining sales of Beyonce, the inability for xtina to be certified with her last two albums etc.

Yeah. I'm telling you and we all know, if Britney is in shape and having that Britney Spears spark, it doesn't matter if she's doing handography or making sure she covers all inches of the 80-foot stage. If you can feel her energy and see her into it, she can win back people in that aspect.
Her body on the Shape magazine is so amazing, and her side profile has been so thin + her booty sticking out further with the arch coming back and less thickness in the arms and legs. This will help in her flexibility, she will feel it and feel more confident.
That's the great thing and something many should start seeing. Recording this album must feel great for her, after all that you've mentioned, plus the mess that preceded the Femme Fatale era. With a great team of producers, plus her citing as her most personal and proof she's writing, I also have the same feeling it'll be something amazingly well received by public.
Well I have a preference of BOMT over Oops!, since they are the same album except more pristine production and vocals on the latter. It just felt like the usual re-do the massively successful debut album niche.
