I don't really see how HIAM underperformed. It broke tons of records, and was a milestone song for her. 411k first week, second consecutive debut #1 song. It's her biggest radio hit ever on the Hot 100 Airplay chart (#5), was a top 5 hit (#3) on her core format, had the most spins ever from a single by her with around 10,600 spins, and will likely end up selling around 2 million when all is said and done like 3 did.
The worst that can be said about it is that it hasn't had longevity. But it has performed incredibly well when you look at what it has accomplished for her, and if less people buy the single, and more buy the album than who cares if the single didn't sell 4 million copies? I'd rather the album sell than the single. The entire reason a single is released is so that the album can see success. If it doesn't help the album than the single is useless. At the end of the day we want strong album sales. This is Britney, not Katy Perry.
