A Name fit for a Queen - Judges' Critiques
Subomie said...
Quote:
HausofJustin - Calypso is a very striking drag name, good choice. I really liked that it drew from both beautiful mythological tales and your own wasted adventures. To me, that is what drag is about. The last name... meh. I appreciate that you said it can be just Calypso, which is how I'll be using for the rest of the Race.
HausofNiko - The name is cute I guess, and the entry is adequate. I think there's potential, but for now this is the definition of a safe entry for me. Try harder.
jpow - The name is perfect, the entry is cute too. The inspiration behind the name I like, but if you don't want to be linked to Katya then don't even mention her. It is a good entry overall though.
DevonRoars - The name is giving me girl that you went to high school with realness, it's the least draggy name here and It doesn't read as fierce at all.
X/O/X/O - The name is very you. It's fine to take your name from your faves, and I'm glad you picked something interesting like Chanel over "Emma" or "Maggie". Making your drag persona from your own characters is an interesting idea and it makes you stand out a bit.
BeyonceBeytwice - A silly, camp name is a nice change of pace next to glamorous, or story-driven ones. The whole entry goes a little messy, but that's not a bad thing and it matches with the name. Solid entry.
DivaDown - The name is... fine. There's camp potential but it wasn't realised at all. Like really girl? I can't help you if you can't help yourself.
getback - The name is a little impractical, but drag is all about that so I'll give it a brief side-eye, but ultimately a pass. The whole entry gives me a rainbows and unicorns vibe, which is cute but it just needed more. This is scraping through.
killer_rose - The name is a little basic, but it's ok. A little backstory is cute and was it nice to see, plus any Alexander McQueen references are okay with me. I see potential here.
Sam - Three-part names are cute, but each part doesn't need to be a reference to three different things. This entry goes above and beyond, but you don't always need to give 300%, sometimes a little simplicity works wonders. Nonetheless, it was a good entry and pretty too.
Tymps - Certainly very you, and I like the entry. I'm not totally sold that it works as a name, but I can look past that. Very campy and fun, which is nice for variety and probably the best choice for you.
Dancehall - Oh, I didn't get the pun at first I think this is a fully realised entry, the name works and the whole package shows me just what kind of queen you are and I'm excited to see more.
jax - This name just screams you. It being inspired by, and in honour of, your late grandmother is perfect. It gets the point across while remaining short and sweet, just how I like it.
Moonchild - The makings of a great entry are all here, but I think you got caught up in your head. The whole thing is very OTT and there's a lot of excess. Drag never ever takes itself too seriously. I think the name is cute though.
Bey_Rihstan - Kaeli is an ordinary name that works well as a drag name too, and the whole thing is a good package. It is extra like you said, but that's very much your style. Really solid entry.
wesleywalrus -

I beg to differ. The name is fine, it's ok. The entry is lacking though, there's not much for me to talk about. At least you wrote more than two lines.
mxtthewdelrey - Real cute entry, it's nice that your character helped you and it was refreshing to read that. The name is just enough to work for me. My one complaint is that we didn't learn much about your character.
MiMiLamb - The name and entry is tongue-in-cheek enough for me, you're basically already a drag queen as your normal self so I'm curious to see how it works in here.
feelslikeadream - The only problem with a Mariah inspired queen is that she's basically a drag queen already. Your personality shines here and I laughed a few times, but I'd like to see more of you because a lot of this reads as Mariah.
YSL - I love that you used a mononym, which is risky but I think this is the perfect name for it. Wilhelmina just sounds powerful and fierce, while being simple and not excessive. To me, it's a perfect drag name. I like your personality too and I'm curious to see more. And Ugly Betty references are always good with me.

HausOfJustin / Calypso Celestle - I like the backstory and explanation but the name itself does not excite me . Calypso in the UK is a frozen ice treat. I'm not tasting much. Excite my tongue.
HausofNiko / Lady Royalty - For someone royal, your name is common
jpow / Koko Khalyan - Koko I like that you took inspiration from Katya. I would like you to do that again and bring some humour. I don't think Katya would ever leave us with a blank expression. You sound like a good in-shape person to have a conversation with. Let me hear what you have to say.
DevonRoars / Anna Williams - Don't be classy, that is boring as ****. Look at Chad Michaels. You're name is ok though
XOXO / Chanel DiAngelo - **** you Chanel
BeyonceBeyTwice / Gina Vitis - You certainly did take inspiration from Beyonce and became boring
DivaDown / Nellie Boddum - Nellie Boddum, I don't think we'll be seeing you on top
getback / Smarties Skittles - I'm kind of getting a Jade Jolie tea which is really bad but given you seem to stan for cheap queens (Courtney, Fame) it seems fitting. I don't like smarties or your name. I would like you see you lip sync
Killer_rose / Christina McQueen - I don't know about you as a drag queen but I kinda want to suck your dick, Christina. I'm imagining you smell nice, you're pretty quaint. You have a cute collection of art, you listen to depressive music. You only wear dark colours, and you have a soft heart. I really like it, Christina
Sam / Essie Jae Shebert - Essie seems like the type of girl to have a few double chins and be continuously bloated but I think that's a great aesthetic and I'm really drawn toward it. I want to explore the crevasses of your body fat.
Tymps / Udders Tutu - I am lactose intolerant.
Dancehall / Yuri Null - I have a pee fetish so this speaks to me on a spiritual level. I love it
jax / A. Nell - Anne would be proud of you, A. Nell. And I am, too.
Moonchild / Scarlett LaPierre - You'll get a 10 from Citrus for mentioning Cher
Beyrih / Kaeli colique - Kaeli I want to know where you grew up
wesleywalrus / Weslina Spice - No this was bland
matthewdelrey / Carmen Scarlett - Carmen you are a tranny tranny tranny tranny tranny TRANNY
Mimi / mimi imsciekend - Your entry made me laugh and none of the others did. You win
feelslikeadream / Carrie Messiah - Kelly and Taylor? No thank you, don't do that.
YSL / Wihlemnia - I want to know what other gay things did you do with your friends when you were young

ATRL DRAG RACE EP 1 COMMENTS
Haus Of Justin -
There is nothing trashier then a drag queen who is stoned at a gas station. Tbh that last part sold me because I was kind of snoozing on it a bit. I do like the name doe. Calypso. I use to live in a neighborhood named after that.
HausOfNiko -
PhiPhi is this you? All this “I’m fierce and a QUEEN” talk. I do like the name. It’s classy and elegant, gives off power. Hopefully you stick around so we can see how fierce you are or claim to be
jpow -
I expect nothing but flips and flexibility from you now with all this gymnast talk. I LOVE Koko. It’s short and cute, and the end part is pretty personal to you so I like that. I didn’t get much from you besides that but since we’re only judging names you got lucky
X/O/X/O -
Love everything about this.
The DiAngelo part is so creative I love it. At first I thought it was after some guy you were dating or met on the internet but it was really fresh and unique for finding your drag name. Chanel reads so classy so I hope you kind of live up to it. Messy bottom.
BeyonceBeyTwice -
This all over the place. Like literal mess. Is that what you were going for? I guess a name like Gina Vitas explains it. You get an extra point for trying.
DivaDown -
Nellie Boddum Three
getback -
Skittles is a fun name. I like it. I would have preferred something like Skittles Delight. Eartha Skittle. Skittle’s D. But since you went with that it’ll have to do I GUESS. I hope you do better next time cause you way to good of a personality to leave round one.
Killer_Rose -
Wow you gave Drag Race entering the work room for the first time realness here. I like that. Christina McQueen is kind of meh personally, but I like the idea behind her and I think she’d turn it on the runway.
Essie Jae Sherbert -
This is so old drag and it’s so fun. Nicole Paige Brooks from Atlanta Georgia teas. Your name is fun, personal, interesting and cute. I love it.
Tymps -
Oop Udders Tutu comes back to LIFE. Another iconic thing that came out of Tinychat :’( I’m happy you went with this tho, because its so weird and odd that it fits you really well. Nice job adem
Dancehall -
I like your approach here. In the sea of all these over feminized names, you stood out and chose something really out there and I like that. I also like the multiple meanings to it. It’s versatile and different. Hopefully these other girls know that Yuri isn’t exclusive to Russia and I'm glad you did. A good drag queen is worldly.
jax -
Girl. You aren’t that SLICK. Anyways. I’m calling You Anne. It’s as messy as I bet your bottom is because you probably don’t wipe.
Moonchild -
This is so classy and reformed. The description was classy and reformed. The character you created is interesting and seems like she’d be able to bring it, so I’m interested to see more.
Bey_Rih -
I keep thinking your name is Kerli. I like that you used your real name. I mean your the only real female here, but idk it doesn’t feel DRAG enough. It’s kind of just there. Soliloquy is such a mouthful and not the good kind.
wesleywalrus -
I would have liked it if it was just Weslina. My best friend also gave me my drag/female name so I like the back story hehe. Not the best, not the worst but safe. So look to stand out next time.
mxtthewdelrey -
Oop a drag name coming from Lana Del Rey? LOVE IT. No really though the back story is really great and I LOVE imaginary alter egos. I think they’re so great and fun to have. We all need someone in ourselves we can create to make things easier and I love how you were able to finally become Carmen through drag.
Mimilamb -
nah bruh.
feelslikeadream -
I’d love to see you do many things in the shower Feef <3.
The name rolls really well off the tongue, especially how great the Messiah part goes with the Carrie. Almost like they were made for each other. Good job. The last line was the most interesting part of the entry though, and I don’t know if thats great or bad.
YSL -
Powerful, bold, and its all you. It’s a great drag name and probably my favorite from the bunch. I'm a sucker of regular names being used or feminized to fit a drag persona. Plus the Tutu part is ADORABLE.

A. Nell (jax.) – I don’t know about the inspiration, though I’m sure it came in you at night. This name is a cute pun, but your presentation left something to be desired. I loved the moment where you said “A. Nell” is the best way to honor your grandmother; good stuff. I wish there was more of that.
Anna Williams (DevonRoars) – When you pick such a basic name, you really have to sell it. You didn’t do that here. How am I supposed to know you’re fierce? Show me, don’t just tell me. You’re obviously very passionate about drag race, so I wanna see that passion in your entries.
Calypso Celeste (HausOfJustin) – I love the backstory behind this name, and it rolls of the tongue easily enough. You had all the makings of a great and memorable entry, but you just needed to polish your story a little more and flesh it out to really engross us in the world of Calypso. Points for an educated and trashy meaning behind Calypso, I live.
Carmen Scarlett (mxtthewdelrey) – When you go for the transformative journey in an entry, you have to give us enough so that we can feel as if we traveled it with you. While I’m not asking you to tell us all about the horrible thing that happened to you (I’m not THAT much like Ru), you needed some more elaboration on how Carmen helped you through in order for us to root for a typical name.
Carrie Messiah (feelslikeadream) – This was nice. Your name was well thought out and you revealed meaning behind it without making me feel like I was being emotionally manipulated. Good job.
Chanel DiAngelo (X/O/X/O) – Work dish. This gave me some self-reflection, personal growth, confidence, and some sass. This is a fabulous entry and I want to see more of them.
Christina McQueen (killer_rose) - Hm. This sounds like the name of any random bar queen, but it was elevated because of your reverence of the fashion the name evokes. You need to work on your presentation to take the judges along with you so that it’s not just you rambling about your drag; I want to be immersed in it and feel like I’m a part of your world.
Essie Jae Sherbet (Sam) – This is so fun and cute even if you have Mongolian Crawdaunt in it. The name serves me camp queen, which is surprising because I expected you to be a glamor girl. I’m not complaining though, because this was a thoroughly enjoyable read. How unpredictable.
Gina Vitis (BeyonceBeytwice) – The name itself is serviceable for a one-time pun, but your write up needs polishing. I like your attempts at humor, but you need to make things a little more put-together so that you come off as in on the joke instead of the butt of it.
Kaeli Soliloquy (Bey_Rihstan) – I, too, love the word soliloquy (and thank God for autocorrect, or it’d be a bitch every elimination). Your drag name combines your real name with something that reflects a part of you without being overly cheesy, and your Bey_Rih-isms are still on display in your entry. I liked this.
Koko Khalyan (jpow) – You have probably the best name out of the entire bunch, and that’s nothing to scoff at. However, your entry was a little…eh. It was boring to me (bc I don’t care for gymnastics), but it DID reveal a lot about you. I’m on the fence on this one, because it was like an Ivy Winters entry. Very creative and all that, but sort of devoid of a personality.
Lady Royalty (HausofNiko) – Category IS: Butch queen first time trying to be funny at the ball. This was very try-hard, baby. Lady Royalty isn’t the most innovative, but Jesus you could’ve given it a better spin. The whole kingdom ******** was just annoying to read, to be quite honest. Tone it back and give us YOU without as many of the titles and clutter next time.
Mimi Imsickened (MiMiLamb) – Uh uh, no m’am. This was lazier than your left eye.
Nellie Boddum (DivaDown) – Oh, honey. I actually sorta like the name, but I wish you had elaborated more. Or elaborated at all, honestly. You know you didn’t do your best, so that shows some maturity on your part. Let’s hope it’s enough.
Scarlett LaPierre (Moonchild) – Do you know the member Element? Your entry here reminds me of some of his from Cycle 12 of ATRL’s Next Top Member. Anyways, this is awesome. You have SO much thought going on behind your name, and you even took us to Carl Jung, bitch. While reading, I kept getting visions of this bomb ass pageant girl from Louisiana with the most evil side eye. I was living for your gig, baby.
Smarties Skittles (getback) – Your reasoning was cute and made sense but it just wasn’t enough, literally. You need more description, because the judges can’t read your mind. I’m not as mad at the Smarties Skittles name itself as some of the others, I’m more upset that you didn’t really tell me that much about yourself.
Udders Tutu (Tymps.) – Excuse me while I watch that video in a trance for the rest of time. Damn. As to your name, I was shocked you actually submitted it. That takes nerve, girl. Your explanation was concise but didn’t feel empty; I got everything I need from your udders girl, and that milk was nourishing. Work heffer.
Weslina Spice (wesleywalrus) – You say there is never a bland side to Weslina Spice, but this entry was bland personified. You don’t have to shade and drag to be engaging, but you have to give us more. You could’ve talked about how being made fun of by your friends felt, and how you didn’t take it that seriously and now are reclaiming that name for your own use. As judges, we’re sort of window shopping when we look at your entries, and you want your entry to entice the judges to come inside the store. After reading yours, I kept walking.
Wilhelmina (YSL) – This was a solid entry, but it needed to go a bit further. I love the origin, but I didn’t feel super connected to the fashion background you talked about. Some more elaboration would’ve helped, I think.
Yuri Null (Dancehall) – Dying at this entry actually being a better representation of the reverse Warholian ideal than ARTPOP. You’re giving me comedy queen with a doctorate degree, and I was stanning. If I saw it in the club, I would’ve given it some money. I’ve got my eye on you in this game.

While you ladies untuck in the Interior Illusions Lounge, the judges and I will deliberate.
