SOTY goes to the composers and it judges based on the lyrics i think.

Traditional R&B tends to skew older - more Anita Baker and Prince. R&B would be what's currently charting. Beyonce and Usher (for example) tend to submit the more urban-sounding song to R&B while they send their ballads to Traditional.

Traditional R&B Vocal Performance is for more like the adult crowd. It has elements of soul, jazz, blues, etc. A lot of the stuff submitted there has an old school sound to it, and many older artists always submit there.
