This song was first shown for Michael Jackson, for his
Bad album. He turned it down, and then it was shown to Madonna, who decided to include it on
True Blue and re-wrote the lyrics. It's one of the first Latin-influenced Madonna songs - the first of many.
It was released as the last single off
True Blue, achieving worldwide success - it topped the UK charts and peaked at #4 in the US. It was also her first #1 in France.
Madonna fans might be already tired of watching "La Isla Bonita" being performed (maybe that's why it ranked relatively low) on tours - Who's That Girl, Girlie Show, Drowned World, Confessions and Sticky & Sweet - that's five.
The video features Madonna as two characters: a sad Catholic woman praying in her apartment while a group of Latin people plays and dances outside and a passionate Flamenco dancer. My interpretation is that the second character represents the first one's frustrated desires. At the end of the video the second one goes out on the street and starts dancing with the people there.
I really love this song. A timeless, unforgettable classic - 10 from me. Don't know why it's so low.
