Y tu mama también - A simple road trip movie; but throughout their journey we get exposed to poverty, to the bad political climate of Mexico, etc.
Children of Men - a movie about a guy trying to move an important girl from one place to another; but throughout we see a dystopian future full of racism, discrimination against immigrants, the ill effects of war, etc.
Gravity - A lone astronaut surviving a space disaster; but throughout we get to observe the majesty of Earth, both the marvels and the dangers of space in vivid realism. It made me appreciate life on Earth, tbh, and how almost immaterial we are to the universe. That moment when she tried to call for help and the only person who was trying to entertain her was Chinese; and the fact that she was saved by other country's space station/ship made me have more faith in humanity, and the fact that despite our differences we are one. It's not a plot that explodes in front of you or preaches themes in life, but the messages are there - in subtle, tiny events, in beautiful pictures.
It's a rarity in Hollywood, tbh. A movie that features only 1 main actor; A survival drama that was disguised as science fiction/action film. That's why I think this should be Best Picture.

i always think movies like 12 years a slave are done nearly every year or at least every other year, the get the best picture win and then they remain in irrelevance
there's just too much about these movies about histories of human struggles, biopics and films that exaltate hollywood, don't get me wrong i love A LOT of those films and i actually love 12 years a slave but as YOU state gravity is just such a MASTERPIECE, i loved every bit of this visual espectacle and THIS kind of movies illustrate what the theather experience should be ALL about, movies like nebraska, philomena, etc... can be watched at home and you'll feel pretty much the same as in the theather
BUT Gravity is just something that needs to be experienced on a huge theather with those amazing ansd stunning visuals, the HEART pounding Score, Sandra's amazing performance, the INCREDIBLE DIRECTION ON THIS FILM AND ITS EDITING!
seriously, this movie is moving, carries a nice human history about survival and struggles and the reasons to be alive while giving us back the worth of every penny we paid to enter the theather
this is way i also think it SHOULD win best pic...
BUt it won't, 12 years a slave is the main favourite, in ANY source of event American HUSTLE will be awarded

instead but i see ZERO chances for gravity, it will be one the night's winners, it'll get some technicals and obviously Best Director, but that's as far as it goes.
