That's true, GaGa will have an advantage in her first week, but at the same time she's going to be under more pressure. Her release has received much more hype than Britney's. HIAM was announced only a few days before it was released and it blew up rapidly. It's going to be very interesting to see if BTW's radio updates can compare to HIAM's.

That's true, though Britney released in early January and still benefitted from holiday gift cards.

I'm sure some people will still have their gift cards when BTW rolls around. But even then there is no better promotion then a Grammy performance followed by a midnight release the following day with an extra day of sales + massive hype.

This was the consensus, but she actually released during a time the gift card rush wore off. Hence 'Grenade' dipping from 452k to 275k the week before. If you check the pattern of the last few years, this 3rd-4th week in January is usually the drop-off.

I didn't mean she released during the height of gift cards' effect. I know she released when their effect had started wearing off. But music in early January still benefits from them (see Ke$ha), especially a big new release from a huge name. I'm not attributing her success to gift cards, she killed it on her own, but they did give her a boost of some sort, especially those first couple of weeks.

I don't think Britney benefitted from gift cards. The week she released is right around when the effect usually wears off (hence Grenade & Firework, etc. dropping another 20% in weekly sales).
