-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS won this first unofficial night of the summer TV season with its encore combination of The Big Bang Theory (#1: 6.0 rating/11 share), Rules of Engagement (#3: 4.3/ 8), Person of Interest (#1: 5.4/ 9) and The Mentalist (#1: 5.2/ 9), which moves into the Sunday 10 p.m. hour this fall out of The Good Wife.
But ABC could be poised for adult 18-49 victory thanks to the debut of singing competition Duets, which averaged a respectable 5.2 rating/ 9 share in the overnights from 8-10 p.m.
Comparably, Duets outdelivered the two-hour season-premiere of competing So You Think You Can Dance on Fox (4.8/ 8 from 8-10 p.m.) by eight percent. And it beat two repeat episodes of Canadian crime solver Rookie Blue on the year-ago evening (2.6/ 5 on 5/26/11) by 85 percent. Opposite Duets, So You Think You Can Dance dropped by 24 percent from its year-ago season-opener (6.3/11 on 5/26/11). Here are the half-hour breakdowns:
Duets (ABC)
8:00 p.m.: 5.3/10 (#2)
8:30 p.m.: 5.4/ 9 (#1)
9:00 p.m.: 5.2/ 9 (#2)
9:30 p.m.: 5.0/ 8 (#2)
So You Think You Can Dance (Fox)
8:00 p.m.: 4.5/ 8 (#3)
8:30 p.m.: 4.8/ 8 (#2)
9:00 p.m.: 4.9/ 8 (#3)
9:30 p.m.: 4.8/ 8 (#3)
It will be interesting, no doubt, to see which of the two reality/competitions has the advantage among adults 18-49.
At 10 p.m. on ABC was the season premiere of aforementioned Rookie Blue at a second-place 4.3/ 8 in the overnights -- 17 percent below The Mentalist encore.
In series-finale news, drama Awake on NBC earned its cancellation stripes with a mere 2.2/ 4 (#3) at 10 p.m. Earlier in the evening in the Peacock net were two repeat episodes of The Office (#4: avg. 1.7/ 3) and an encore telecast of America’s Got Talent (#4: 2.8/ 5) from 8-10 p.m.
