Guys I seriously need HELP! I've finally mustered up the courage to approach my crush but I have literally no idea what to say to him........

He's a senior in my major, I'm a Sophomore. He's so hot and I was kind of intimidated when I first realized who he was but that kind of evaporated and now I'm just ready to pounce. I see him sometimes and have made eye contact most of the times.... I just can't get a gauge because I don't actually KNOW him. A few weeks ago I looked up and he was walking past, looking at me, but making a kind of stanky face. I was doing this ugly ass expression when I was looking down but I don't see any reason why he'd be directing that kind of look at me, so I assumed it was just RBF or something............... But OMFG anyway next time I see him I'ma strike up a convo, I just don't know how to. Like, I want to just compliment something he's wearing but that's just a kind of a passing thing.... How should I go about it without coming on strong or seeming like some fried bitch?

Last year we went on a school trip together, we didn't really talk but since then he started saying "Hi" to me. The thing is he doesn't do it everyday, it's very confusing. Sometimes I catch him taking a glimpse at me when I walk by but I don't really know what to do. I'm one of the most popular guys in school so maybe he just wants to be friends with the popular guys?
I'm not out and I don't think I will come out during highschool because my social life would basically end, I live in a very homophobic country.
He always likes my photos on Facebook and I always like his too. He never had a girlfriend.

Go up to him and say something like "Hey, I was walking out of school and one of my mates told me that you were...gay? If you are don't worry my cousin is, so I support you" or some **** like that. If he acts nervous/ startled, he gay. If not, he prolly just a weirdo straight.

If somebody came to me and said that I'd probably punch him and I'm gay af. I'll probably just scare him and he'll never talk to me again. I want to get close to him, to befriend him and see where this will take us but I don't really know how.
My deskmate's gf is in his clasroom and we go there sometimes and hang during breaks. He's with his friends in the back of his class, he sees me but he doesnt't have the courage ( I think ?) to come up to us. And there's no way I going to him and his group of geeks
