Guess who is turning out to be the toughest judge on “The X Factor” U.S.? It’s not Simon Cowell or L.A. Reid. It’s Demi Lovato. On June 16, 2012, I attended “The X Factor” auditions at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California. And although I can’t give away too much spoiler information, what I can say is at the auditions that I attended, Lovato was the judge who said “no” the most to contestants — even when sometimes the other judges disagreed with her. However, Lovato has loads of personality, and I’m absolutely certain that she is going to win over millions of new fans who never heard of her before but will become admirers of her after they see her on “The X Factor.” And even though she is only 19 years old, Lovato acts more mature and is clearly smarter as an “X Factor” judge than fellow judge Britney Spears, who is 30. Lovato is also a rival to Cowell for being the most entertaining judge on the panel — and that may be why Cowell and Lovato have been getting into conflicts that are at times uncomfortable to watch. (More on that later.) How much of Cowell and Lovato’s “fighting” is staged will be up to you to decide when you see it on TV. The second season of “The X Factor” U.S. will premiere on Fox in September 2012, on a date to be announced.
(Auditions in Oakland continue on June 17 and June 18. I will have a full report for both of those dates as well.)
But first, here’s a brief summary of what I can and can’t report in this article. “The X Factor” has asked that journalists who are covering the auditions to not reveal the contestants’ names and hometowns and which contestants were rejected and which ones were put through to the next round. We can report how the judges and contestants were acting and what was said during the auditions.
And I will say this about the June 16 auditions in Oakland: the solo singers under age 30 did better than the groups and better than the solo singers over age 30. However, one audition date is not necessarily an indication of how the entire season will go.
Here is a summary of how the judges were acting during the Oakland auditions on June 16:
Britney Spears
I have said all along that it was a terrible decision to hire Spears as an “X Factor” judge because she brings nothing to the table except a big celebrity name. I was proven right, based on the auditions I saw. Spears has a dull personality, makes unoriginal commentary, and she seems very disconnected from the contestants and the audience. I don’t get the impression that she is enjoying herself as an “X Factor” judge. And when you consider that she’s getting paid a reported $15 million for the job, all I can say is “ripoff.”
Spears has never had a reputation for being intelligent or articulate, so her generic and uninteresting commentary came as no surprise to me. (At one point in the evening auditions, Spears said the word “artitistically” when she meant to say “artistically.” Someone get her a dictionary, please.) Even her fans admit that lip syncher Spears is not a great singer but she makes up for it in charisma.
Unfortunately, Spears as an “X Factor” judge is seriously lacking in charisma. Here is a perfect example: After the judges came back from a break, the warm-up host (comedian Frank Nicotero) asked the audience to yell out the name of the judge they love the most. The majority of people cheered and yelled out “Britney!” And what was Spears’ response to all this love from her fans? She sat still in her seat like a statue and didn’t even turn around or give any acknowledgement to the people who were cheering for. Not a smile or a wave. Nothing. Someone should remind Spears the next time she’s lazing around her mansion and eating Cheetos that her fans are the ones who made her a multimillionaire.
And this may be controversial to say but I will say it anyway because it’s true: If Spears didn’t have a cute, blonde image, if she looked like Susan Boyle, people would not be as forgiving of her stuck-up diva attitude. A talking mannequin would probably have a better personality as an “X Factor” judge.
To her credit, at least Spears did not walk out on auditions this time, as she did at "X Factor" auditions in on May 24, 2012, in Austin, Texas, and on June 9, 2012, in Kansas City, Missouri. And she did briefly interact with the crowd a few times, such as when a few people in the front row reached out to shake her hand, and she appeared to force herself to shake their hands in return.
Even though Spears is 30 years old, she sometimes talks in a baby voice to the contestants instead of acting like a grown woman. But then again, because of her psychiatric problems, Spears doesn’t have legal control over her business and personal affairs, so it’s no surprise that she resorts to infantile behavior. Apparently, she can’t even go on a break without being accompanied by her fiancé, Jason Trawick, who was following her around like a puppy dog at the auditions when she wasn’t at the judge’s table. Spears’ manager Larry Rudolph was there too, but he wasn’t acting like a cloying babysitter, which is apparently what Spears needs to have since she doesn’t live her life as a fully functional adult who is capable of making rational decisions on her own. And yet she’s supposed to be mentoring “X Factor” contestants. That’s like having a blind person give vision tests: not a good idea.
Simon Cowell
Ever since Cowell became famous a TV talent judge, he always has a fellow judge whom he becomes known for clashing with the most on the judges’ panel. In his “American Idol” years, it was Paula Abdul. In the first season of “The X Factor” U.S., it was Nicole Scherzinger. For the second season of “The X Factor” U.S., it’s definitely Lovato, who has replaced Scherzinger on the panel.
Even though Lovato is clearly a better judge than Spears, Cowell has not had a harsh word to say to Spears, as if he doesn’t want to admit that hiring Spears was a big mistake. He treats Spears with proverbial kid gloves. At the Oakland auditions on June 16, he appeared to be silently coaching her, as he shared notes with her at the judges’ table. Spears is like the overpaid elephant in the room.
By contrast, Cowell was at times downright rude to Lovato. For example, during one audition, when Lovato was giving feedback to a contestant, Cowell loudly made spitting noises while Lovato was talking, to try and drown out what she was saying. A lot of people in the audience seemed to be shocked that Cowell would stoop that low.
But Cowell needs to be careful about how badly he’s going to treat Lovato because many people in the audience are rooting for her. Unlike Scherzinger, Lovato is no pushover bimbo on the judges’ panel, and she is getting a lot of respect from people in the audience, who often cheered at what Lovato had to say.
As harsh as Cowell is with Lovato, he still doles out the most memorable insults to contestants who give bad auditions. Here are a few choice comments he made to contestants whom he rejected:
To a teenage female trio who wore neon-colored outfits: “You’re the only group in the world that gave me a headache from listening and watching you.”
To a male duo in their 20s: “You’re like two bears in hibernation … I’m looking for people with ambition. You’re so slow.”
To a 57-year-old male solo singer: “You sang and performed like a dog trying to lay an egg.”
To a female quartet in their 20s: “Everything was good until you started singing.”
Cowell may be just as rude as ever to contestants who give bad auditions, but he has become friendlier and more accessible to people in the audience at “X Factor” auditions. In 2011, when I attended “X Factor” auditions in Newark, New Jersey, Cowell would shake hands with people as he walked through the crowd to the judges’ table. At the Oakland audition on June 16, Cowell not only shook hands with people, he stopped many times to pose for photos with fans (usually with adoring women), and he spent so much time taking photos with fans that he was almost always the last to arrive at the judge’s table.
And here is an indisputable fact: If you are a young, attractive female contestant who wears a body-baring outfit, but you have a mediocre voice, you have a better chance of getting a “yes” vote from Cowell than from the other judges.
By contrast, Cowell (compared to the other judges) was hardest on the groups that auditioned. Considering that Cowell is credited with being the mastermind behind One Direction (the biggest act to emerge from “The X Factor”), the bar of success has been set pretty high if groups want to impress Cowell.
Demi Lovato
Cowell can dish out plenty of snark, but not only can Lovato take it, she can dish it right back. During a break at the June 16 auditions in Oakland, Lovato mentioned that she wanted a miniature pig as a pet. Later, when a 14-year-old male contestant mentioned that he had a dog named Paul Newman, Cowell quipped, “If I had a dog, I’d call it Demi.” Lovato retorted, “If I had a pig, I’d name it Simon.”
When a teenage male duo sang Lovato’s hit “Skyscraper,” she said, “I’m honored that you chose my song.”
Cowell interrupted, “No, you’re not.”
Lovato said, “Yes, I am.”
This banter went on for close to 30 seconds before Lovato said to Cowell in exasperation, “I’m going to throw this pen at your head!”
In the first season of “The X Factor” U.S., Reid made a notorious mistake when he criticized teenage female contestant Drew for singing “Skyscraper” because Reid said it was a song for a “40-year-old.” (Reid was unaware at the time that “Skyscraper” was a hit for teenage Lovato.) At the Oakland auditions when the teenage male duo performed “Skyscaper,” Lovato reminded people about Reid’s mistake and she playfully teased Reid about it.
Later, when an eccentric, 24-year-old female contestant (who was dressed in a very unusual outfit) performed an original song that she wrote about being crazy, Cowell took a low blow by saying, “You could make this a tribute to Demi.”
Lovato, who is has been open with her struggles with being bipolar, was clearly offended, and she told the audience, “Tell Simon not to be mean to me anymore.” The audience roared their approval for Lovato and booed Cowell.
Although Lovato gave the most “no” votes during this audition date, she rejects contestants by giving constructive criticism. She also has a playful sense of humor, which charmed the audience.
L.A. Reid
Epic Records chairman/CEO Reid is the no-nonsense judge on the panel who is the one who is most likely to look at the big picture: “Can this artist have hits after being on ‘The X Factor?’” Reid is also a judge who really lets feedback the audience (i.e., people who would pay for an artist’s music) influence his vote. He changed his vote a few times during the auditions because of feedback from the audience.
Lovato and Reid seem to have developed a close bond (Reid even said to Lovato at one point “That’s my girl), and there is a clear divide on the judges’ panel. Cowell and Spears are most likely to agree with each other, while Lovato and Reid are most likely to agree with each other.
Best and Worst Performances
The “X Factor” U.S. auditions on each date have two sessions: one in the afternoon and one in the evening. Here is a summary of the best and worst performance for each session at the June 16 auditions in Oakland:
Afternoon session
Best performance: A 13-year-old female singer with a very unusual name blew all of the judges and the audience away with her outstanding vocal talent and confident stage presence. She sang three songs: Beyoncé’s “Deja Vu,” James Brown’s “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” and an a cappella version of One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful.” She was one of the few contestants that day who got a standing ovation from the audience.
Worst performance: A 17-year-old male singer did an original song about a breakup with a girlfriend, plus a pathetic version of Bill Withers’ “Lean on Me.” He was off-key and had virtually no stage presence. Reid commented on the performance: “It went from bad to worse.”
Evening session
Best performance: A 13-year-old male singer (who is going to get a lot of comparison to Justin Bieber) had the audience on their feet for his energetic and charismatic versions of Katy Perry’s “Part of Me” and LMFAO’s “Sexy and I Know It.” It was with the latter song that he really won the audience over, because he did some stage moves that, as Cowell commented, weren’t exactly age-appropriate. But this singer made it seem so charming and “cute” that I wouldn’t be surprised if he makes into the Top 24 this year. He also got a standing ovation from the crowd.
Worst performance: A 21-year-old male vocalist, who appeared to be stoned (based on his incoherent rambling and his inability to understand what the judges were saying) performed a horrific original rap song with all the charisma of a slug. He also put on and took off his sunglasses during the performance. Lovato poked fun at his wearing sunglasses indoors by and saying to the contestant, “Is it too sunny in here?”
The two best performances (in my opinion) from the June 16 auditions in Oakland will probably be shown on TV. There were two other performances that will probably be shown on TV, although I won’t reveal what the judges voted.
One of them was from a 42-year-old woman, who says she has her husband dress up and pretend to be Cowell when she is practicing at home. Sure enough, her husband came out from backstage wearing a very Cowell-like outfit. And lo and behold, he just happened to have a black wig in his pocket that he put on right there on stage as he stood to the side during his wife’s audition. It was all very staged and was not spontaneous at all. You could tell that “The X Factor” producers planned for this to happen. Cowell’s response to his would-be impersonator was he said the whole thing was “weird” and “uncomfortable.”
The other performance that will most likely be shown on TV was from a 40-year-old female singer who told a sob story about how her two kids died in a fire that was accidentally set by her cousin. She also acted very over-the-top with her sassiness, and she confessed that she had a big crush on Reid. (She was either very nervous or under the influence of some kind of drug, because she was acting very hyper.) At one point, she ran down to the judges’ table to give all of the judges a hug.
Compared to the Newark auditions I attended in 2011, the Oakland auditions had less “train wreck” contestants and more people with genuine talent. I’ll have more to report from the Oakland auditions taking place on June 17 and June 18.
