Tom Cruise is one of the last in a dying breed of movie stars who people actually go to movie theater to see. That doesn't happen anymore today. People aren't going to "Transformers" to see Mark Wahlberg. People aren't going to "Captain America" to see Chris Evans. These type of actors are interchangeable in all of today's tent-pole roles. People go to those films for the franchise.
Actors rarely sell films on their name anymore, except for people like Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr. and Leonardo DiCaprio. I would say Angelina Jolie sells films, except that would be a complete and utter lie, seeing as Disney did
all the heavy lifting with "Maleficent" and not Angelina Jolie herself.

He became a star though the Die Hard series and action movies travel well overseas. Plus he was married to the super-global (in the early 90s) Demi Moore so that helped.
