1 1 1 19 #1 19 wks Uptown Funk!, Mark Ronson Featuring Bruno Mars 1
If not for the new recurrent rule, Uptown Funk would be on its 75th charting week, putting it on the verge of tying Jason Mraz's "I'm Yours" for the 3rd longest Hot 100 run.

But those videos were viral and being shared from person to person
Just because a video doesn't get immediate attention like Wrecking Ball, Anaconda, Hotline Bling doesn't mean it's not viral. All of those music videos went viral. You can't tell me a song with over a billion views on YouTube was just because someone heard the song on the radio and decided to check it out. There are tons of songs that topped radio or radio formats with way less views. Check your facts boo

. I mean I could understand the frustration if she had done countless discounts and made cheap remix versions of the song to boost its performance but she literally did nothing in the US all of the 9 weeks to push the song. Its performance thus far has been solely consumer-driven.

Not slamming Rihanna, just being honest about how the song being so reliant on just streaming with sucky sales and airplay shouldn't stay at #1 that long. Like SYA shouldn't have gone past 9 to MAYBE 10 wks.
|
Then sales arent sucky though if you compare it to the song thats #1 on HDS. Work has never sold less than 40% of the song that was #1 on HDS for its entire chart run. You cant look at sucky sales, you have to include the sales climate we are in.
If you compare her reign to SYA, Rude Im sure shes stronger. If you look at it percentage wise. There were weeks where Rude was being outsold 2:1 but remained #1 due to high radio airplay. AGAIn, another factor that is not consumer-driven like Streaming. As far as Im concerned its one of the most IMPACTFUL #1 singles in a while. The most impactful since Uptown Funk.

Are you sure? I estimated it would've fallen out after 70 or 71 weeks.

Being a Rihanna fan no one could expect an unbiased and objective comment from you in the first place. The assertion Work is more "impactul" than either Hello or SYA is beyond ludicrous , as Hello held a 4:1 lead over a much stronger set of runners up than Work has kept out of #1. As I said, Work deserved a six or maybe even seven week run at #1, but not 9.

Despite all that he was still able to craft a coherent argument that actually makes sense. The bottom line is no one else was able to do better than Work. #1's often don't stay #1 in sales forever as people already have the song. Additionally, it should be noted that popularity of a song doesn't stop once you buy a song. That is where streaming comes in.

I meant popularity based on Streaming. I explicitly said consumer driven. Most of Adele's weeks were due to its high radio airplay and digital sales. Which Im not diminishing. But like Uptown Funk, Work really strived on the use of the song in media on youtube and from people making videos to help sustain its longevity atop the chart.
Radio AI is manipulative because Program Directors and callout scores are not a great representation of what is really popular. How can a small group of people dictating what song to play have so much effect on the chart? This is where consumers get the control with streaming. The fact that Work spent so many weeks at #1 without even touching Top 5 on Pop radio is amazing. It's the only song to spend so many weeks at #1 without achieving that feat this decade if memory serves correct.

But true smashes don't die out in sales like Work. Hello, LY, Hotline Bling, Sorry, and The Hills also streamed strongly, but showed much longer sales longevity than Work. Top 40 is far from my favorite format, but even there Work barely made the Top 10. A song barely in the Top 20 in sales after only 12 weeks (less than 3 months) after its release, and failing by a significant margin to top HRS and already out of the Top 5 isn't a "smash." That's why I compare Work to Rude, the end of SYA's run, or CFMF, which hit #1 but weren't huge hits. Rude will finish the year in the T 10, but with no airplay and poor sales Work's 9-week run at #1 clearly doesn't reflect a smash hit.

While brian continues to fume Work is #1 again this week.
Let's stop arguing and celebrate that 9th week ladies

Hello reached the same streaming levels as Work despite selling over 4 million downloads. There's a HUGE difference between the size of the songs. I admit Hello didn't have the staying power of RITD or SLY. However Work is nowhere near as big as Rihanna's own We Found Love either. WFL WAS a smash! I'd argue Umbrella and especially Love The Way You Lie is bigger than Work too.
