Once the lead singer of an alternative rock band she formed while studying at NYU, Colleen Fitzpatrick changed her name and sold out her sound for stardom. This blast of bubblegum-reggae bliss was her debut single as Vitamin C, as well as her biggest hit, reaching the top twenty of the Billboard Hot 100 and scanning gold. Half of the voters in the rate gave "Smile" a score of 9 or higher.
Best bit: the joyful noise of the chorus, which features grimy guitars, Lady Saw's hooky shouts of "Whatcha gonna do?" and an infectious call for happiness
The music video... takes place in a record store, in case you weren’t aware that Vitamin C wants you to buy her album.
just caught up!!! this song is iconic and anyone who went to an american high school and didn't have this blasted during their graduation went to a flop school tbh
“Playas Gon' Play" (2001) 3LW
Hot 100: #81
Days on TRL: 11
Overall score: 7.84 High score:10 (Truth Teller, BadMouthBetsy, Poxy, MP2K, BlueTimberwolf, V3$$3L.) Low score:3 (Taste of Honey)
Speaking about her departure many years later, Naturi said she left 3LW because she was mistreated. Is it possible this second single is where it all went wrong for her? Finally given a chance to shine on lead vocals, "Playas Gon' Play" proved to be an utter flop, prematurely ending the group's debut era. Despite that, its chorus may be the group's most iconic moment, eventually inspiring a Grammy-nominated #1 smash from Taylor Swift.
Best bit: "Playas, they gon' play/And haters, they gonna hate/Ballers, they gon' ball/Shot callers, they gonna call" (How could it be anything else?)
The music video... is a peek at 3LW's island vacay. The girls will play while their parents are away!
Before her "Dip It Low" comeback, it seemed that Christina Milian's musical career might best be remembered for this theme song to the hit Disney Channel series, which enjoyed a long run on Radio Disney's weekly countdown. It's an unexpectedly bopping tribute to that "basic, average girl" who's here to the save the world, and its shout-outs to the era's then-newfangled technology only get more deliciously campy with time. "Call Me, Beep Me" was perhaps the biggest surprise of the rate, ranking in the top five of the countdown at one point.
Best bit: "Call me, beep me, if you wanna reach me/When you wanna page me, it's okay/I just can't wait until I hear my cell phone ring"
The music video... was more of a behind-the-scenes promo for the show that aired all over Disney Channel in the summer of 2002.
