Complicated? No. But there's SO many choices on EVERY detail when building. There are dozens of carpets, wallpapers, materials, you can build ANY way, and the gardens especially. When you buy a house you put furniture in it, and that has SO many choices already. For your first time, I think you should get to the playing part faster is all.

I love love love The Sims. If I go missing from ATRL for a few days, it's usually cause I'm in a simming kick and I'm devoting all my free time to that.
I've been playing a giant legacy family for the past couple months. I'm like 5 generations deep, they have a **** ton of money (not acquired by cheating), and they live in a really fabulous mansion. I'm sort of bored with them, though. I need a new expansion. Generations got old pretty quickly.

Is anyone else really anal about the way the worlds look? I never use Create a World because it's just too damn complicated to create your own landscape and get lots lined up to roads, but I take all the worlds that come packaged with the game, or worlds that I've downloaded, and I bulldoze every house and community lot, evict all the families and then set out to build every necessary building to my liking. Takes so much time, but I can't handle those goofy/tacky houses the kids at EA build.

OH LORD, I've never done that and I wouldn't even attempt to! I'm not that anal about the neighborhood itself because I'm too busy playing my families.
I don't understand why everyone is saying this! Yall just need to spice up your families
I think that's why I was able to keep my legacy family going for 5 generations. I chose odd traits for them whenever they'd age up, and once they had money I started giving them some of the silly professions (ghost hunters, and whatnot) that came with Ambitions. They were more fun to play with than my "normal" sims who are involved in traditional careers like Politics or Business.
