It's pathetic that only one (half) Black woman has won Best Actress in history and I guess that won't change this year. It's also sad that all the black women to win in Supporting were dark skinned while the only one to win Lead was mixed. I can't.

Now I really hope Emma Stone and Natalie Portman gave truly GREAT performances because for their machine propaganda they made Viola shook and my poor Michelle is screwed

Also I feel like Viola wasted a Best Actress win which would have been more important for her.
If she's going supporting for Fences then she should have gone supporting for The Help and she would have easily won 5 years ago.

You can take solace in the fact that it wasn't going to change even if Viola Davis stayed in Lead Actress category anyway, at least right now she is the frontrunner to win.

She's the frontrunner to win a category Jennifer Hudson, Monique, Octavia Spencer and Lupita all won in the past 10 years. I mean, In what world are they on the same level as Viola Davis?

I think Natalie would've still won but Viola had a chance to win in lead and at the very least would've became the first black actress to score 2 Best Actress noms. There is nothing groundbreaking about her winning in supporting.

Why would everything have to be groundbreaking? An Oscar is an Oscar, I don't think people like Meryl Streep, Jessica Lange, Kevin Spacey, Robert De Niro, Cate Blanchett, Denzel Washington etc had a problem with first winning in their Supporting category then winning in Lead category. Viola Davis is a very talented actress and she will have many more opportunities to win more awards including Lead Actress Oscar, this year was not her year and winning is almost always better than losing.

Also she will become the first woman / second actor after Idris Elba to win two individual SAG awards, so I guess that can count as something groundbreaking?

And the median age for an Actress winner I believe is 33 years old (Halle was 35.). Viola's getting further and further from what Hollywood considers the prime age for actresses, and her winning supporting would make the urgency to give her a lead win later much less. Esp given how a lot of her narrative is arguably being due.

Previous winners who got a follow-up win in Lead Actress after age 50 are: Katharine and Meryl, the most prominent nominees ever.
