10. Sturgill Simpson - Welcome To Earth (Pollywog)
Sturgill Simpson makes the type of country music that even non-country fans can get into. A true talent. Welcome To Earth offers the first taste of his most recent grammy nominated album and the way it's orchestral component plays through the first half is very interesting. It later transcends where the instrumentation and percussion becomes more active. The song is ultimately about Sturgill's grief from not being physically there for his son while he travels to different places due to his famous lifestyle.
9. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - I Need You
Nothing really matters anymore, not even today
No matter how hard I try
When you're standing in the aisle, and no, baby
Nothing, nothing, nothing
My heart.... ugh. I'm just gonna say this track is full of emotion, sorrow, and heavy-hitting lyrics. The way he constantly repeats "Nothing Really Matters" was a reminder of him still living in a world where his son isn't there. One of the most devastating tracks of 2016.
8. The Avalanches - Because I'm Me
As a huge fan of The Avalanches, when I first heard this, it brought back the 'Since I Left You' vibe all over again. At first I was a bit iffy on the vocals as their first album was limited on that component but later on it really does add some personality for the tracks. Love Camp Lo's verses, and all the samples used. Kinda hard to explain it but it gives me a warm/fuzzy feeling whenever I hear it.
7. Vektor - Recharging The Void
It wouldn't be enough to call this a song, because it's truly an experience. To anyone who doesn't know them, Vektor is a thrash metal band that delivered one of the best metal albums of the year for me with their best closing track. There's a lot to take in. The writing, the thrash sections, the mid section solo, the near-end section choir, the obvious Pink Floyd vibes, it's just.....
6. The Weeknd ft Daft Punk - Starboy
Ever since "The Morning", I've been a fan of The Weeknd. Seeing him progressively change his sound throughout the years has been something. The way Abel did it with Starboy was quite smart. Even though the song is more commercial than anything from his mixtapes and arguably Kissland, there are still traces of his core sound. It's dark, heavily re-playable, and not even completely generic either. Daft Punk really added charm as well, to give them their production credit. Starboy was the perfect lead single to go though.
5. Rihanna - Kiss It Better
Been waiting on that sunshine boy, I think I need that back
Can't do it like that
No one else gonna get it like that
As a big Rihanna fan, I've been hyped for her new material for years. Ever since the snippet of KIB was revealed I already had a feeling it would be one of my favorite Rihanna songs. When the demo was leaked and the instrumental was even more euphorically revealed I was even more hyped. The chorus is amazing, the pace is fine, production wise it's amazing, the bridge >. I know the first and second verses are basically the same thing lyrically but it hasn't hindered my enjoyment of the song. Special thanks to Natalia Kills for this too. I'm just glad it wasn't scrapped at the end of the day, and despite its commercial performance it'll stick with me.
4. Frank Ocean - Nights
Time to start your day bruh
Can't keep being late on me
Know you need the money if you gon' survive
The every night ****, every day ****
The most common criticism I see with Blonde is that it's "boring" but I believe that nights in particular is anything but that. I also believe that it was intended to be a mini-Pyramids in a way. The song has multiple transitions, from the beginning where he's sing-rapping, to the middle where the instrumental becomes more laid back with the drum beat becoming more steady and the second half where the staple & slow trap-percussion beat lays in. The most interesting thing lyrically about this was the Hurricane Katrina reference. Even as the title track, it makes a fitting song to play around the late hours. The 2nd half just takes me away.
3. A Tribe Called Quest - The Space Program
Gotta get it together forever
Gotta get it together for brothers
Gotta get it together for sisters
For mothers and fathers and dead ninjas
To hear ATCQ (and Phife Dawg especially) currently spit bars again was something I needed to hear. The whole album actually was like a thanksgiving feast that i'm not sure we deserved but it's what we received. The Space Program urges equality and unity and for all our people and to combat any injustices that's preventing progressive movement. A perfect opener for the album to dwell further into political issues that affects the black community and minorities in general. I love the fact that it sounds like an O.G tribe track even when it's still fairly new.
2. Kanye West - Ultralight Beam
We on an ultralight beam
We on an ultralight beam
This is a God dream
This is a God dream
This is everything
2016 was a crazy and uneven year for Kanye. I don't even want to touch up on all the stuff that happened this year on this section. Along with the contributions of The Dream, the church choir, Kelly Price, Chance The Rapper and Kirk Franklin, Kanye has delivered unto us a complete gospel-rap track with some striking vocals. When I first heard this I had some chills. I think little girl's message was brilliantly sampled in with the song too. If the rest of the album was in this magnitude, it could've been really special. I still think this his one of his best all-time tracks he has.
1. David Bowie - Lazarus
Look up here, I'm in heaven
I've got scars that can't be seen
I've got drama, can't be stolen
Everybody knows me now
It wasn't until an hour before Bowie's death was confirmed when I first heard Lazarus and the Blackstar album (Which is why i'm labeling this as a 2016 song even tho it was technically released late last December). It was such an eerie coincidence that it made the experience unforgettable for me as the year went on. I wasn't the biggest fan of Bowie or fully aware of his discography until Blackstar but I wish I was more into his past work before this year. Lazarus was already an amazing track, even before his death, but since the track has more context now, it just makes the song all that more powerful. I had no idea of any condition he was in, but I knew he was an influential and key music figure. I am still grateful that he dropped his last magnificent album and video before he left. R.I.P to him.
Now my main song list of 2016 is completed. It was kinda hard to organize/prioritize most of it but eh. Gonna start on the K-Pop songs on Wednesday and then mixtapes/albums after.

2. Kanye West - Ultralight Beam
1. David Bowie - Lazarus
Ultralight Beam is okay, don't really understand all the praise though (not just here, but with all the critics lists and stuff.) But then again I only listened to it maybe twice so perhaps I should go back.
Starboy Daft Punk's production alone >>>. Kiss It Better is slayful as we all know, glad it made it to the top 5.
5. Rihanna - Kiss It Better
Been waiting on that sunshine boy, I think I need that back
Can't do it like that

As a big Rihanna fan, I've been hyped for her new material for years. Ever since the snippet of KIB was revealed I already had a feeling it would be one of my favorite Rihanna songs. When the demo was leaked and the instrumental was even more euphorically revealed I was even more hyped. The chorus is amazing, the pace is fine, production wise it's amazing, the bridge >.

To hear ATCQ (and Phife Dawg especially) currently spit bars again was something I needed to hear. The whole album actually was like a thanksgiving feast that i'm not sure we deserved but it's what we received. The Space Program urges equality and unity and for all our people and to combat any injustices that's preventing progressive movement.
