The biggest question mark is “The Witch,” a creepy horror flick that A24, the indie label behind “Room” and “Ex Machina,” picked up over a year ago at the Sundance Film Festival for just under $1 million. The pre-Salem story of a Puritan family that becomes mysteriously afflicted has been embraced by critics and currently enjoys an 87% “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s also popping on social media platforms and earning the endorsement of novelist Stephen King. That response has some analysts predicting it has breakout potential.
“The Witch” was originally intended to be a multi-platform release, pairing an on-demand debut with a limited theatrical roll-out. But A24 rethought its strategy based on the reactions it was getting in screenings. It decided instead to push “The Witch” on to 1,800 theaters, marking the widest release in the company’s history. To limit its financial exposure if the bet fails to pay off, A24 has leaned heavily on digital promotions instead of more costly television spots.
Tracking has the film connecting with horror aficionados and racking up more than $10 million. However, the studio insists that given its limited marketing spending, it would be content with an opening in the $3 million to $4 million range. That could happen, of course. There are plenty of films that stir excitement on social media only to collapse away from the comforting confines of Twitter.
But many box office sages believe that “The Witch” can cast a strong enough spell to convince people to see what all the buzz is about and what kept no less an authority on the macabre than King up at night.

Save your money...
![rip](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/korn0818/ATRLSmilies/rip_zpsec10ede9.gif) I should learn to never listen to hype. Regardless, I went in with zero expectations and was very let down. Honestly, I would wait for home video. Absolutely nothing you have to see in a theater.
Edit: Is home video even a term anymore? ![JonnyϟLightning](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/korn0818/ATRL_Smilies_All/atrlers/jonny_zpsc73391c5.png)

I really want to watch this. The historical context is what makes it most interesting to me.

If that's something you're interested in then I'm sure you'll really like and appreciate certain aspects of it. In that sense, it's very well done. Albeit I found the characters difficult to understand.
In terms of story or being scary or even particularly engaging, it fails, in my opinion.

I loved it...the kind of horror I was waiting for. Can't wait for a second watch.
Definitely not for everybody.

SMH. As I said months ago, people going in expecting some fast paced or jump scare filled horror movie are going to be sorely disappointed. The hype around the film is due to the fact that it is an extremely well-made, well-performed, atmospheric, and subtle approach to horror. For it being the director's first film on an extremely limited budget, it is beyond impressive. It is more fueled by dread and paranoia than anything, which is refreshing after the host of cheap mainstream horror films we tend to get every season. If you can appreciate that, you will likely appreciate this film for what it is. Also, I called it as this year's It Follows or The Babadook in that the hype will hurt it because most major audiences will go in expecting something it's completely not. ![@michael.](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/korn0818/ATRL_Smilies_All/atrlers/micheal_zps45ccf519.gif) People would likely be better prepared for it expecting a paranoia filled period drama with some disturbing moments.

I love horror movies and I know what to expect when watching them. I know whether to expect a slow-burn movie or a jump scare movie. I can appreciate and enjoy slower, more subtle horror movies. I also thoroughly enjoyed It Follows and The Babadook. The fact of the matter is that both of those movies managed to go somewhere, and have some scary elements. There was nothing even remotely scary about this movie. Well-made, yes. Well-performed, yes. Great atmosphere, yes. Scary? No. I wanted so badly to even feel a pang of dread or suspense and there was nothing there for me.
I don't think it's a bad movie and I appreciate what it set out to do. But I know people will be say "oh it's a slow horror movie, none of those lame jump scares!! you just don't get it" and that isn't the truth. I get it, I knew what to expect but I thought it was completely void of anything scary.

Posting this from the horror thread. I watched this yesterday at midnight...
I went to the midnight showing LOVED IT. Like everyone's said if you didn't like it follows, good night mommy, starry eyes which are known as artsy horror you will not like it. I honestly think after a year and one month waiting for it it was worth it IMO. It was disturbing, I loved the way it was shot and the family was amazing. I can see Anya(Thomasin) having a bright future.
The movie was slow paced, it was tense and suspenseful and was building up to THAT ending. The casual horror movie goer will not enjoy it? Why because they go to watch horror movies for jump scares which is what you get in mainstream horror. I'm sure most people don't know this movie is an indie movie and don't know the difference between indie(artsy) horror and mainstream horror. It was all about the atmosphere and the performances are flawless.
In two words: flawless movie just don't go thinking you'll be getting random ghost/dead people randomly appearing on your screen to scare you.

Now that I'm into it and appreciate I got to finally understand horror is more than just a ghost/dead body/monster randomly jumping on the screen to make us scarred. I agree that it was a bit hard to understand in some parts ![JonnyϟLightning](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/korn0818/ATRL_Smilies_All/atrlers/jonny_zpsc73391c5.png) I really liked the ending tho...the whole movie I was wondering if it was real/really happening/.
