Such carefree and underrated pop perfection. The piano keys are like crack & the jazzy saxophone with the choir at the end is literal euphoria. I hope she delivers a whole album of this quality!

#19 Lady Gaga - I Want Your Love
I grab my pillow and squeeze it tight.
Quote:
Disco orgasm. Nile Rodgers is imo one of the best writers in popular music, the guitar work on this song is so shamelessly 70s and those tacky ass bells are my weakness. Gaga sounds fantastic singing it & I would kill for more in this vein on her upcoming project.
-
#18 Carly Rae Jepsen - Run Away With Me
Baby, take me to the feeling.
Quote:
If I Want Your Love was shamelessly 70s then this is perfectly 80s. Pretty much the perfect album opener, an invitation into a throwback synthpop paradise. Run Away With Me is Carly's magnum opus don't @ me

#17 Kendrick Lamar - King Kunta
Life ain't **** but a fat vagina.
Quote:
I'm a little BIT of a sucker for west coast hip hop. Kendrick sounds awesome riding the funk on this & i from last year. Not only are the punchlines in this great but it's got a pretty awesome message, scraping away all the clingers and leeches who've coincidentally shown up since he's found success.
-
#16 Madonna - Joan of Arc
There could be a war but I'm not going down.
Quote:
Easily Madonna's best ballad since American Life. So poignant and relevant to her current position in the industry, though it might come off as a bit "woe is me" from a rich privileged woman but it's a sweetly human moment from a woman who has made a career out of being fearless.
I like all the other songs on this set. Wasn't super amazed by Gaga's cover but it's cute still. I don't think she should do a whole disco project though, her voice doesn't suit it.

I hate that Ghosttown gets all the praise when it's good, but fairly pedestrian as far as Madonna ballads go.
I just love disco productions so I don't care who sings it.
Lowkey a messy Dark Horse tea but it's got enough distinct personality in it to make it work. The hook gets in my head when I really don't want it to so this song has become a guilty pleasure for me throughout the year.

#14 Ellie Goulding - Something In The Way You Move
Not one bone in your body good enough for me.
Quote:
I can't believe she didn't make this a single (yet), wtf? It's instantly catchy, a glorious beat and by FAR the best of Ellie's radio pandering songs. This is a smash waiting to happen, come on sis.

#13 Adele - Water Under The Bridge
Why do I hate the idea of being free?
Quote:
Going with the water metaphor I kinda wanna jump in and physically swim in this song. The gentle rolling instrumentation is generic af for 2015 but Adele sounds great on it and the lyrics are super relateable. I realise that description fits most of her songs but Water stands out to me because I can't get it out of my head.
-
#12 Giorgio Moroder & Foxes - Wildstar
Wishing on a weightless heart.
Quote:
Not many people LOVED Giorgio's album this year like I did. As mentioned before I'm a massive disco wanker and this combination is heavenly. Though it's repetitive, maybe even a touch basic, there's emotion behind this song and it makes me want to dance. Palpable feelings and a sweet rhythm? I can't really ask for any more from a dancepop song.
-
#11 Jamie xx & Romy - Loud Places
I go to loud places to find someone to be quiet with.
Quote:
So totally gorgeous. I love the lyrics to death and the slow buildup into the climax of this song is everything. When the choir comes in... Very very nearly one of my top 10 favourite songs of this year. The sample works so so well. Slay me king Jamie.
WELL since I'm going on holidays tomorrow I won't have access to a computer I may as well polish off my list. Here we go.
#10 Jess Glynne - Don't Be So Hard On Yourself
It's not an easy road but I'm not alone.
Quote:
An absolute SMASH and the best song of Jess' debut by far. The lyrics are cute and it's a great mix of 90s dance and modern pop. Those soulful vocals >>>
-
#9 Bjork - Stonemilker
Show me emotional respect.
Quote:
This was my standout from Vulnicura because I can feel the pain in her voice and relate to the words. It's kind of a difficult listen because of that but there's undeniable beauty in seeing Bjork laid bare like this.
-
#8 Sigma & Ella Henderson - Glitterball
You're like the sun to the evening rain.
Quote:
I wish this was a bigger hit in Australia like it was in the UK because it's the perfect brand of D&Bpop that Sigma does perfectly. It also has a host of fabulous remixes that bring out Ella's awesome vocals more.
-
#7 Adele - When We Were Young
Let me photograph you in this light in case it is the last time.
Quote:
Yas Adele serve that nostalgic optimism. Something I love about this song is that it manages to be totally tender but also a perfect stadium song. I can easily picture a whole arena chanting along to that glittery chorus. Truly the successor to Someone Like You.
-
#6 Florence + The Machine - Queen of Peace
And my love is no good against the fortress that it made of you.
Quote:
YAAAAAASSS. It's like a Celtic battle cry mixed with a pop anthem. I love how it starts calmly before erupting and it all builds up to a signature Florence thundering climax. One of my favourite melodies on the album, I think the production is akin to an explosion and you can feel the passion in every belt.
-
#5 Naughty Boy, Beyonce & Arrow Benjamin - Runnin' (Lose It All)
Memories turn to dust, please don't bury us.
Quote:
TOTALLY UNEXPECTED, I was taken by this from the very listen. Naughty Boy productions can be hit or miss but this song is GORGEOUS. Beyonce sounds great, Benjamin sounds great and the lyrics are a mix of melancholy and optimism. ****ing love it. What a beautiful music video to accompany it as well.
-
#4 Marina & The Diamonds - Savages
Murder lives forever and so does war.
Quote:
Now if this isn't the best written pop song of the year I don't know what is. Relevant societal commentary in the chilling verses and the chorus packs a punch. This is Marina at what she does best, uncomfortably honest observatory lyricism and a big pop beat. Shoutout to the iconic old man at the festival strutting in that viral vine video.
-
#3 Madonna - Living For Love
After the heartache, I'm gonna carry on.
Quote:
LBR, if there's two things Madonna can do it's ballads and vocal house. I loved the demo and I love the album version, it's just a really fab song with a great chorus. Easily her best single in 10 years and a certified bop. Mother.
-
#2 Florence + The Machine - How Big How Blue How Beautiful
Maybe I'll see you in another life, if this one wasn't enough.
Quote:
Ahhh wow. The second half of this song is what I imagine heaven would sound like if it existed. Florence is best when she goes BIG and she went all guns blazing for this title track. It's about heartbreak and the end of a relationship but somehow remains hopeful and oddly sunny in disposition. It's like a duality exists in the song that captures the end and the beginning of something significant. When the horns come in I go
Yoga is AMAZING. The areola line slays
*ignores the rest from that set*
Stonemilker is amaze. Love the graphic for it too!
Savages IS the best from Froot.
I wouldn't put LFL that high though..
Ok! My #1 and favourite song of the year, the one I love the most.
Marina & The Diamonds - I'm A Ruin
I played with your heart, and I could treat you better but I’m not that smart.
Quote:
Such a masterpiece! So calm to begin but once it picks up there's a visceral funk in the beat that brings out Marina's voice perfectly; even though the lyrics border on teen-girl's-diary I know exactly what she meant to convey and there's a great vulnerability in there. It was especially relevant for me at the time it came out and I still love it to this day. Maybe in another 12 months it'll get old but for now, my song of the year.
Thanks to everyone who's come into my thread & followed my list. It was a bit of fun! Maybe next year if I'm still around I'll plan it a bit further ahead and get a bit more creative.
