Yes because Lana revolutionized pop with her revolutionary retro noir dope cinema california romantic tragic girl aesthetic. She influenced a new breed of pop stars. Yes. Please. Keep enlightening ATRL about how innovative and influential Lana Del Rey is.
Shes better than Halsey, by far. But lets not act like shes that much more superior in terms of originality and genuinity. Shes another faux-indie hipster chick cliche as well, a walking urban outfitters and 2012-era tumblr advertisement. She just popped up before it became a totally transparent cliche. Right time right place.
This minimal indie pop hipster **** was going to be popular regardless. These girls like Halsey just feel late to the party.
she's just an awful combination of Lorde, Marina, Charli, Lana, and tumblr who tries way too hard to be this alt/indie girl to appeal to teenage girls. i honestly can not stand her
With the exception that she was already making this kind of music for years rejected because she didn't sound like Katy Perry or Kesha. Once Video Games blew up, she became a star.
And let's not act like tumblr had a huge impact on pop culture before. It didn't. And to reduce LDR's success to tumblr is just beyond stupid. You don't sell 5 million+ with one album just because tumblr loves you.
No she wasn't. The music she was making before sounded nothing like Born To Die. She sounded like she was copping acoustic Kurt Cobain, Chan Marshall, PJ Harvey, etc etc. It sounded good mind you, but regardless its not like she was what became Lana Del Rey previous to blowing up. Just like Lady Gaga was not what she made before either. They both got 10x's more pop and commercial sounding.
tumblr is one of several social media vessels that our generation has used to share music and make trends happen. tumblr was having its peak right around the time lana started blowing up, not because of her mind you, but she popped up representing trendy aesthetics that were already popular. thus why she was so easily embraced, (not to mention she was a fox). i also dont understand what you mean about me "reducing" her to tumblr making her popular. I was just saying she was neither original nor was she the pioneer for some sort of trend or fad. it was happening with or without her, she just capitalized off of it coming out when she did.
Also, if it was not for the 2012 tumblr crowd, lanas career definitely wouldnt have catapulted that quickly. just straight up. she owes all of her success to social media.
Because her whole aesthetic was a cliche before it hit mainstream. She represented every wannabe hipster tumblr cliche you'd expect her to and thus certain people that mightve been just outside of that thought she was being "innovative" or "indie" because they hadn't caught on just yet. But everything she was doing was already something everyone was seeing (flower crowns, minimal urban beats, "soft grunge" or whatever the hell people call/called it). She happened to start happening right at the dawn of that flooding mainstream. Thus someone like yourself attributing her to being at the forefront of it becoming mainstream. But it was already becoming mainstream with or without her. Thus why I say she was just at the right time at the right place.
So now with a new batch of girls like Halsey, Allie X, and Melanie Martinez kind of coming on the scene and representing tumblr cliches as well its kind of like alright. A batch of girls already did this a few years ago. You guys just seem late to the party.
But who was channeling and influencing what Lana was doing before her? Kanye? Weeknd? Cat Power? Nancy Sinatra? Born to Die was 10 years in the making, no one was going to create that album but Lana. Where is the proof that these girls would have record deals if it weren't for her?
She's just the definition of a cringeworthy indie-pop singer. She tries to act like she's original but she clearly just ripped a page out of the Lana Del Rey book and decided to pronounce her words like a goblin trying to sing, aka the "indie girl" voice. She's also a huge SJW and those are also cringeworthy.

The Blow? There were plenty of artists creating minimal pop. Not to mention hip hop and rap was already started to do what she did with born to die which was create a down tempo trip hop minimal beat. Some white girl comes in and cops urban beats and everyone wants to give her a medal for being some sort of pioneer. okay. and please, lana stans are so delusional going off like she invented vintage noir and melancholy torch balladry with a modern edge. lets play devils advocate for a second here, if you're going to reduce other artists (ive seen lana stans do this to lorde quite often) to being nothing more than jumping on lanas downtempo bandwagon, then you might as well reduce lana and all of them to jumping on the bandwagon adeles blockbuster 21 album created with the general public by completely opening then edm obsessed consumers to melancholy torch ballads with lounge crooning. you wanna give someone credit for turning the tides to a more pared down approach in pop music? give it to adele. lanas just another lorde/charli tumblr produced popular artist perpetuating trends rather than creating them. ive said this countless times not that it means anything to any of you (nor should it) but I like a heap of lanas music. I just despise the way her fans overcredit her as if shes some sort of revolutionary and groundbreaking pioneer. you guys are like fame-era monsters swearing gaga was gods gift to music and everyone needs to bow down and give her credit.

BTD and AKA have many similiarities. The production on BTD is bigger, yes, but so was the budget. There are no two different artists. When I listen to the albums back to back, I hear a natural progression from an artist reaching out for a bigger audience.
But honestly, we never agree on anything. Once again, pointless discussion.
Halsey on the other hand has no previous material I know of before we got to hear from her with her EP and the debut album. Yes, she has gotten a concentrated push by the label which we have seen in the past for artists like Gaga or Lana or even Iggy Azalea, but in her case, she has not gone through the roof because her sales in Europe are lackluster and she probably won't even outsell UV wordlwide.
And once again, Lana didn't sound like anybody else at that moment. Halsey just sounds like some others who came before her. No own identity and she tries so hard on her Twitter and Instagram, but this whole "Biracial, Bipolar. Bisexual" chantuse is just cringeworthy.

They have similarities in the sense that they are the same person that wrote and sang the music sure, but aesthetically and in terms of how commercial sounding they are they couldnt be more different. Tragic rich girl chasing daddies is a theme Lana has vice gripped and will never evolve from so it was present in AKA all the way to current day Honeymoon era.
Im sorry but nah. I think Lana was refreshing in the sense that pop had been solely excessive and gaudy until Adele came in and changed the tides and allowed a more pared down and minimal approach to music to enter the scene. And I think Lana provided an option for people. But I dont think her sound was some sort of groundbreaking era altering event. I mean if you're not just exclusive to only whats on top 40, lana del rey wasnt anything substantial. which is why her ever praising base consists of pop stans that care about the likes of nicki minaj and lady gaga. shes in the same league as they are shes just "tragic spice". however she brought some cinematic instrumentation to the top 40 ill give her that I guess but damn do you guys as a stanbase swear like shes some sort of ****in pioneer. Like I cant.

You're really going to lazily compare Adele to Lana Del Rey? Their approach to music is completely different, and boiling it down to their use of ballads is offensive to both artists. Lana has made ballads before 21 was released. You have yet to provide a SOLID example of someone or something that has preceded Lana's presence in music, while countless publications will cite Lana Del Rey's impact whenever someone like Selena, Taylor Swift, Troye Sivan, Halsey, Melanie Martinez do something that is so blatantly channeling her.

I've tried to listen to her songs and they're pretty bad. Vocally AND lyrically. Her stans are pretty obnoxious (they're pretty much the same demographic as 1D stans, unsurprising since she used to be one of them). And that lyric that went viral on tumblr (the thing about red and blue and a lilac sky) is legit nearly identical to a poem I wrote when I was 14. Meaning she's corny and childish af
