I meant comparing two people with the same work performance, like obviously if I'm hiring an IT person and Watermelondrea has 10 years of IT experience with great references, and Jill has no work experience and a history of criminal behavior, I'd pick Watermelondrea. But if they had the exact same resume and everything else, I'd pick Jill over Watermelondrea. But in the same scenario I'd pick Watermelondrea over Kingkingquesha.
There's a study on this, where a professor sent the same e-mail / resume, but changed the name to indicate race and gender, and showed a bias in response rates:
