Lupita does not have WASP features.

Lol none of those girls you mentioned (minus maybe Tinashe, but she's biracial) look even remotely European. They're just light skinned.

If anyone thinks Beyonce or Rihanna would be as popular if they were dark skinned is delusional. It's not just the racist executives behind the scenes in the music biz, it's the consumers who are more comfortable with light skin. Studies have shown that white people and even some blacks find light skin to be more "accessible".
Nobody better mention Janet or Whitney as exceptions. They are not Lupita or Viola's color. However, Grace Jones was and maybe that's why she is so bitter toward other artists. They became massive while she was probably held back due to not having the "right look".
And to think some people don't believe colorism is an actual thing.

She could have been the exception to this rule. Azealia is a lot like Lauryn Hill that way. Personal troubles and a lack of ambition stand/stood in the way of their success. Azealia is young, thin, angular, has large, wide-set eyes, symmetrical features, beautiful in a way that mainstream, white America would embrace despite her color. Lauryn passed up a lot of opportunities after TMOLH, started getting a rep for being hard to work with, etc., etc.. It would have been nice to see her star continue to rise. Her tour for TMOLH was sponsored by Armani, Hollywood was calling (she passed up Lucy Liu's role in Charlie's Angels). Lauryn could have been much bigger than she was, just as Azealia could be much bigger than she is, and it would really be symbolic, because it's almost impossible for a black woman to break in the music world these days, if she doesn't have light skin.

It's shouldn't, the article on the OP isn't about her.

As much as it may be an "inconvenient truth", European colonialism, Arabic conquest, and slavery in the 16, 17, and 1800's in Africa, and the Caribbean are a big part as to why you have lighter skinned, and/or Anglo/Arab featured black people. What was done to the African people was awful, but let's not act like certain genetic traits such as lighter skin, green/blue eyes, and certain facial features happen spontaneously...

But what are you even saying?
Racial admixtures have happened in much of the world. It doesn't change the fact that Lupita is black. And her features are "black" as well. Obviously Rihanna is much more mixed, but even still most of her facial features are more negroid than caucasian. So not sure what point you're trying to make...

People with dark skin can still get skin cancer with prolonged exposure. Protect yourself!

There's a reflex in the West to attribute whiteness to everything that is beautiful. Lupita's features are Nilotic, but you could say the same of models like Alek Wek, Nykhor Paul, Grace Bol, Atong Arjok, etc. Lupita does not look European.

Just the truth as to where those admixtures come from. That's just historical fact.
I'm saying that the world is mostly Eurocentric, and female black singers/actresses with European features will always be more popular. Of course Lupita is considered black, but her features are Eurocentric in nature.
Rih is less identifiable...that's why people label her as "exotic". She can play with her ethnicity, her past family Anglo genetics are just more pronounced.

Rihanna and others blacks from the Americas yes, but Lupita no.
Maybe if Lupita was North African, Ethiopian, Somalian, or Etriean you could make a case.
But she's not. She's Kenyan. There's not admixture present. That's what Nilotic black people look like. All black people in Africa are not a uniform people. It's why it's the most diverse genetic continent in the world.
