Like someone else said she died young and didn't flop beforehand so we all remember her for what she had achieving and her potential. I don't subscribe to the notion that there would be no Bey because they are completely different but she definitely wouldn't be on the level Brandy and Monica are on, her career was growing while theirs were regressing into adulthood and she was finally achieving a crossover audience.

It's not a lie, but it's not exclusive to aaliyah. Every time an artist dies their talent/artistry gets overhyped to the gods and beyond. It happens every single time, a person dies and all of a sudden they were a "genius", "ahead of their time", etc. and it's like why was nobody saying those things when they were alive. It's just the way it is.

When people like post I know they don't have a clue or were not even alive when Aaliyah passed, she had just successfully launched a film career the year prior and the accompanying soundtrack executively produced by HER was a huge hit and her album launched successfully to rave reviews and good sales despite no hit single. Aaliyah wasn't slaying anything in the 90s but statutory rape charges with R.Kelly.

Monica and Brandy consistently outshone her during the 90s. She was behind them in star power, relevancy, and sales.

Clearly her sales were low. She was neither a amazing singer or dancer and brandy was a much bigger solo act at the time she was out.

And you know this... how? Aaliyah's career was on an upward trajectory but Brandy (although I love her) peaked with NSN. And Aaliyah was still good for years to come with The Matrix, Honey, Sparkle etc. you tried.
