Because they have longevity. Why don't we talk about how certain artists can't debut with more than 300k unless they sell the album for cheaper than an iTunes single?
It's funny how the singles artist have one of the longest charting albums in history and amazing longevity most pop gurls wish they had Please stop, longevity >>>>>>>>>>>>> front loaded first week sales.
Beyonce:
I Am Sasha Fierce (2008) 7-8m
4 (2010) - 3-3.5m
Beyonce (2013) - 3.5-4m
Taylor
Fearless (2008) - 9m
Speak Now (2010) 5.5m
Red (2012) - 6m
1989 (2014) - 2.5m*
*Still selling very well
Katy & Rih might not have first week sales, but they still have huge longevity & can perform similarly/better than the girls who have high first week sales, like Beyonce, for example & Britney who had recent huge first week sales during the Circus era.
Heck... Rihanna and Katy even pull final numbers similar/better to the Red & Speak Now albums (both which debuted with 1m+ first week).
People on this site clearly don't know what "singles artist" means and that's pretty sad and embarassing to read.
A singles artist is an artist that is able to have several hits but can't sell their album. For example, this is Pitbull and Flo Rida's case. Lately, we have Iggy Azalea and Ariana that can be called this way.
A singles artist is not an artist that can align hits while getting a Platinum album (even 1.5-2M sales actually) in 2014. This is called being able to do both.
So yeah, don't use words if you don't know what they truly mean.

Katy and Rihanna might be stronger single sellers than album sellers but neither of them are "singles artists". All of their albums are platinum and they both have at least one multi-platinum album. A singles artist is somebody like Jason Derulo.
I don't think anyone should be worrying about "singles" and "albums" artists.
listen, The amount the girls sell in their first week isn't representitive of being a "singles" or "albums" artists. The music industry is a business. There are people that study trends, sales, demogrpahics etc that work for the label.
First week sales are representitive of how the label acts. In Madonna's case (just as an example) She's a major touring act. So, they say to themselves "Should we spend money or promoting the music that will result in a few million $ profit or do we spend that money on the tour where will will make hundreds of millions?"
The answer is obvious.
In Katy's case, Obviously they spent some money on the music and promoting the music because it's important for an artist in Katy's career span to sell well but it's not secret she has high tour demand so the balance of the scales reflects that.
The label will make money wherever they see the most viable option. They spend money to make money and they estimate their return based on their investment.
