In all honesty though, I don't think Zayn has the drive to be successful solo. We literally only see him when the band comes out with a new album, and then he disappears until it's time to tour. He hasn't built that much of a celebrity/brand around himself like the other boys have.

I wouldn't necessarily say that's a bad thing tbh. Liam, Louis and Harry may be the more vocal ones, but they're also the most annoying ones imo. I think there's a lot Zayn has going for him: good looks, a humble personality, writing talent AND he's the one in the group with the most vocal talent as well.
Being the soft-spoken one didn't hinder Nick Jonas, as we see his solo endeavour has been the most successful out of all the Jonas brothers. And we all expected Joe to be the one to hit it big.

He doesn't have what it takes.
Anyone who remembers him on X Factor will remember that, at boot camp, they had a dancing task during which he threw a huge bitch fit and ran off crying. Meanwhile Mary Byrne (an old lady from Dublin who actually has arthritis) was shaking her tatas all over. Simon had to leave the table and go to where he was hiding, curled up in a ball having a dull, and coax him onto the stage to not even half-ass his way through whatever basic choreography he refused to do.
He doesn't have the drive and needs other people to carry him. Fact.

They were all really young and inexperienced back then. That was literally years ago and I'm sure he's been forced to do a lot of things he didn't want to being in the limelight so much for the past few years. People change and grow, it's not really fair to use that one incident as a basis for the rest of his life.
He obviously has enough drive to be part of the biggest boy band in the world, touring, and making his own music (along with 1D music) on the side. I think he'll be fine.
He has the looks and the talent, I'm sure that will carry him far. He doesn't need to be talkative.
