Yes.
Images and legacies can be tarnished, but they'll never stop being legends (look at Michael, Whitney, Madonna, Mariah, Janet). They've all faced flops and mediocrity towards the end of their careers, but they're still legendary. Same goes for Britney.

I was about to give a snappy retort considering someone can say the same about Britney but...

but OT she's more like a Pop Culture ICON tbh.
when I hear music Legend I think more about Whitney Houston, Mariah, Aretha, Stevie, Prince, Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, Beyoncé... people with actual memorable stage presence and talent.
as I used to say Madonna is an exception. and there'll never be another Madonna type of exception.

If Britney isn't a legend, Beyoncé certainly ISN'T. Let's not .
And I would say maybe not just yet, but out of all of her contemporaries/the current pop girls she definitely will be.

Borderline- if she were a little bit more respected, i would say yes. but while i know that many legends (like MJ) have suffered from bad publicity and remained legends, people like him still had respected bodies of work and talents. i dont think britney has that- her music is considered the ultimate bubblegum manufactured pop by the majority. she's definitely an icon though- and will be remembered.

I think Britney needs another great album like ITZ to make her a legend.
She is obviously an important pop figure of the 2000s decade and will be remembered for her contributions to pop culture. But she isn't a legend yet.

I love Mariah but from your logic, Mariah wouldn't be considered a legend either due to her breakdown then? That's not right.
Britney is obviously a legend.

No one "stops" being a LEGEND just because of an era. If they were, they will ALWAYS be a LEGEND no matter what.
And to the OP, Of course she is.
Anyone with common sense & no hate KNOWS Britney Spears is a LIVING LEGEND.

Honestly, yes.
I think people voting no are saying so because they're comparing the Britney of recent years to her peers. And in that sense, you're right. She can't keep up with them. She can't dance as well as the ones who do dance, and she's literally the only girl who never, ever sings live. Not even once for a ballad every now and then. But the thing is, there was a point in time where she was the biggest celebrity on the planet, and the world went crazy for her. And if you're not old enough to remember it, that doesn't change the fact that it happened. And if you want to compare the Britney of 2014 to the other pop girls of 2014, that still doesn't change her legacy from the late 90s and early 2000s.
Her in her schoolgirl outfit from BOMT alone will be remembered decades from now. Just as people think of Elvis Presley's iconic looks and are reminded of the 60s, or think of Madonna/Michael Jackson's iconic looks and think of the 80s, they'll look at Britney's schoolgirl outfit and VMAs python look and will think of the late 90s/early 2000s. Regardless of how much talent she still has (or doesn't have) anymore, her legacy and her peak remain unbothered.

Every legend has taken an artistic risk and the good sis has not being allowed ever (lbr, she doesn't want to either). Legends aren't the artist that sell the most, Britney has legendary numbers that were achieved by the master minds behind the management of her career, and the blind, erratic yet loyal support of her fans. That's what she really has, legendary fans that have gone the extra mile to live through the very impressive numbers that back up her undeserved yet undeniable success.
