Mariah on the hand will always be legend, even with her recent flops, just like Madonna is still a legend despite MDNA flopping

But for stars like Mariah she can fail to sell a single copy of her next album, that doesn't change the fact that her legacy is secured.
You need to be somewhat of a Legend prior to your flop before you can retain that title afterwards, and for that title you need a long career.
Where's the reach? You obviously don't know how people thought of Mariah from 2001 (although it really started more like in 1999/200) up until 2005 when everyone was convinced she was over
Mariah's accomplishments from 1991 to 2000 supersede Christina's from 1999 to 200(?) (I would say 09 but back to basics was nothing noteworthy either)

People thought MJ was over too but for other reasons
That's not really accurate. Michael was never thought to be a poor seller in the circumstances of 1993 - hence a giant insurance payment was made to let him go and sell tens of millions more albums. His sales never faltered through the 90s. The one time an album was deemed unsuccessful was in 2001, an album that Sony deliberately didn't promote in order to try and cause Michael financial problems. He never released a studio album after that.
That's not a fair comparison at all, Cher's been around, for what?, 60-70 years? Christina hasn't proven to comeback from anything yet, but the Voice is a good start.
Cher's 5th album was a flop and the next few albums after that were too. That was just 6? years into her career. It wasn't until Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves that she was successful again. Then she released a few more flops after that.
I mean... she wasn't always successful, but she had presence I guess. No one quite like her.
I can't at Xtina stans trying to compare X's situation with Cher, MJ, Madonna, etc.... Xtina flopped with Bionic, then flopped even harder with LOTUS. She's now on a competition show. She's more of a Paula Abdul without the hits and dance moves, but with a better voice.

Christina never reach the success of Michael or Mariah but she FLOPPED harder than both.
Xtina fans, their delusion. :toofunny2;
Has Say Something not already outsold We Belong Together worldwide? X's legacy keeps growing even while underperforming since she's always got something going on with her eras.
Mariah is a legend and nothing will change that. Glitter is a cult classic anyways Literally still discussed just as much as her most successful album, even if it's just to mention that it flopped.

Mariah sold more for various reasons (among them releasing way more albums and a different sales climate) but again the point is they survived their first decade fine and didn't have issues until around the same point in their career
Back to Basics nothing noteworthy? Ok now you're just operating on a bias lol. No one considered that a flop
Glitter did not sell millions and it did not have a hit single. Even Mariah fans don't consider Loverboy a hit because we all know it's circumstances with its 49 cent discount
And Mariah flopped twice in a row too: Charmbracelet anyone

It was not a flop but it left no mark
none of the songs from that album are one the biggest songs from the 2000s
