The first single of Within Temptation's
The Heart of Everything was this addictive tune, a duet with Keith Caputo. I thought it had potential to make them more popular in the US, but it didn't really do anything. That's too bad, because this band definitely deserves to be even more successful than they already are.
One of the best songs ever, "The Poet And The Pendulum" is a 14-minute epic masterpiece and the highlight of Nightwish 2007 album
Dark Passion Play. It can be compared to their most famous song, "Ghost Love Score", although it's not as good, because Anette is kind of drowned out by the music and her voice can get a little annoying. Still, "The Poet And The Pendulum" was only one of two songs with more than five weeks at #1 this year, and would be higher on this list if it wasn't handicapped in mp3 plays because of its extraordinary length.
"What'cha Got 2 Lose?" is an amazing dance song, and exactly the kind of music I expected from Blake. He pushed for this to be the first single, but unfortunately the label forced "Break Anotha" on him. Hopefully it can still be a single in the future.
One of the many gems on
This Delicate Thing We've Made, "Neverland" tells of a little boy who witnesses his father's violent behavior and dreams of killing him and freeing himself and his mother from his reign of terror. Despite the heavy lyrical content, the song has a weird uplifting melody, which makes it all the more brilliant.
"Casey" is a great song that Darren wrote about his sister. It will be released as the album's third single, a peculiar choice, but it
is an excellent song, just not very radio friendly. The best part is the end, when he sings "coming through the sky like a satellite, like a radio wave, a meteorite" in the most amazing way ever.
