It's so weird to see you realistic with Britney ![JonnyϟLightning](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/korn0818/ATRL_Smilies_All/atrlers/jonny_zpsc73391c5.png) I like this Timber

Don't try to make it seem like Shakira spent the early years of her career on a level playing field as other Pop artists. ![Bibliotheque](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/korn0818/ATRL_Smilies_All/atrlers/biblio_zps23dff242.gif) I know you're trying to be sneaky, but let's not.
Yes, Shakira started her career earlier. But she also had the major burden of not knowing the language that the rest of the popular music world gave preference to (English). It's not her fault that the world prefers English language songs while she was born in a Spanish-speaking country (which impacts the potential reach of her Spanish material). She had to learn English in order to compete with the rest of the major Pop artists in the music industry.
Frankly, Britney already had an advantage in simply being born in America.

Gurl, slow down with the smiley faces. Shakira is big, but not nearly as big as Britney, which is what the thread is about. I'd actually say Shakira's problem was she didn't have an innovative marketing point. Like Britney Spears took Madonna's knack for controversy, musical influence from Janet Jackson and a mix of hers and Michael's performing styles and wrapped it up with a "Lolita" image, her invention. That WW impact was so big it has influenced: Alizee (from France), BoA (from South Korea), Mandy Moore (America), Jessica Simpson (America), just about every Japanese female idol group, etc. She then went on a step further and turned the Lolita image in to a sexy image, an image that was followed by Christina Aguilera (global star), Miley Cyrus (global star), Koda Kumi (Japan), So Nyeo Shi Dae (South Korea), T-ARA (South Korea), etc.
If only 2014 counts, wouldn't they both be at 0 impact since "Can't Remember To Forget You" isn't having any impact whatsoever?

Shakira.. I mean since shakira crossed over into the Anglo Market, she has consistently outperformed Britney album/sales/tours. Music wise shakira has been of a force since 2001. Lets not.

Nnn the messy threads tonight. Terms of overall impact, I'd say Shakira. Britney's debut era comes close though.

The topic isn't about nowadays, it's in general, and you and I know who takes the crown in this one.
Did Shakira influence young girls and teenagers? Did Shakira have a 30m selling album? Did Shakira become the best selling female artist of a decade? Did Shakira sell over 100 million albums? Did Shakira win the Michael Jackson Vanguard Award? Did Shakira ever had an iconic performance, music video or a phrase? Did Shakira.. you know what, I could go on all day but I'm going to stop, You get the point.

You realize "I'm A Slave 4 U" is inspired by Janet Jackson and that the music video itself came out before Shakira was famous in the U.S., right? Shakira actually went to the man who directed it (Francis Lawrence) and he did her video for "Whenever, Wherever" after "I'm A Slave 4 U."

You mean CRTFY the song with a video that reached 100 million views in 9 days. The song that right now is #3 worldwide without any kind of promo?

![Bibliotheque](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/korn0818/ATRL_Smilies_All/atrlers/biblio_zps23dff242.gif) Ojos Asi was Shakira's first WW song, it won VMA. Even Legend X loves the song/video and said she was a fan of her music. Shakira had impact in the US even before the crossover so lets not.

Because Work Bitch was such a worldwide hit. At least CRTFY is getting so much
views on Youtube, it shows Shakira's power, her impact. No one cares
about Britney anymore that's why she's performing at Las Vegas.

It is what it is. Britney has a bigger impact on the industry and regular people.
|
It's a legitimate point. In this case, the artist's birth country is important as it determines the obstacles that a person has to face in order to become successful.
I never said it was Britney's fault for being born in America. I'm saying that she had that as an advantage, which made things easier for her, as it does for most artists that are born in English-speaking countries. It is what it is. Pretending that Shakira and Britney were on the same playing field, though, is really pathetic. Of course Britney could find success more quickly and on a bigger scale when she was born in the biggest music market knowing the language the world runs on. That's not a bad thing for her. That's great for her!
I'm simply acknowledging that Shakira performed to the best of her abilities within the circumstances she was born into, and went beyond the norm to make herself even more competitive.

Go check the "Beyoncé vs. Rihanna" thread and see my post about Beyoncé inspiring Rihanna. Let's work together more often

The truth has to be told time and time again. ![Gay Cat](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/korn0818/ATRL_Smilies_All/random/cat_zpsebvh5uip.png) I just hate when people try to disprove it like we don't have chronological proof it happened. I was even alive and remember it very fondly. I used to have a very love/hate relationship with Christina for her attitude towards Britney and her great music/videos/voice.

She Wolf sold considerably less than Circus. Sale El Sol sold less than Femme Fatale (and don't bother coming at me with that "It sold 4 million copies WW" argument that Wikipedia posted from that Mexican newspaper, El Carrero. I will snatch you ruthlessly for citing a newspaper). Britney's overall album sales are millions above Shakira's.

I never argued that she was bigger than Britney. I just argued against your "despite having 7 years more of a career" comment, because it was a shady comment. ![coffee2](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/korn0818/b80efe23.gif)
