WALE - "VANITY"

Hm, where do I begin? I didn't know much about american rapper Wale before this year, only knowing him for a Lady Gaga collaboration and an awesome sample of Rihanna's "Question Existing" on one of his album tracks on his debut. Once again, it was his sampling that attracted to me to "Vanity", an introspective track that seemingly mocks the braggadocio nature that he's surrounded by on a daily basis. The true gem of this track is the sample - "Mad World" by Gary Jules - an earworm that is very hard to shake. This chorus was awesome and catchy enough to place it at #35, and that's all, really.

WYNTER GORDON - "LEVITATE"

Released at the beginning of the year, independent artist Wynter Gordon self-released her second EP Sanguine, part of her four part series The Human Condition. The real gem of this particular EP was "TKO", which was released last year and landed within the Top 3 of my 2012 song list. However, Sanguine also happened to birth "Levitate", an airy track inspired by Africa. Electronic at it's core, "Levitate" features sugary light vocals over a bubbly beat, and every production trait seems to live up to the track's name. "Levitiate" is a beautiful love song about giving into love and feeling like one can fly.

LONDON GRAMMAR - "METAL & DUST"

I've only gotten into London Grammar over the past couple of months, and was clearly late to the party. The british trip hop trio are really something to look out for, creating an addictive mix of hypnotising vocals and relaxing production to really soothe the soul. "Metal & Dust" is arguably their most 'upbeat' offering, starting off slow and building into something that hits a little harder, although still very subdued. The best part is the bridge, a chorus of we don't argue... fluttering over a sweeping string composition and a trip hop beat, creating a climactic moment before simmering down again into tranquility. The band definitely know what they're doing, every echo and rhythm is executed to perfection.

PARAMORE - "STILL INTO YOU"

"Still into You" came as a shock to a lot of Paramore fans, but this breezy pop cut proves the band has potential to go in this direction and make something awesome if they please. Not that they would, but at least it wouldn't suck. "You" is an adorable track about being madly in love despite being with a partner for a lengthy period of time, something we all hopefully are able to accomplish in our lives. The hooks are spot on, the guitar riffs are short and sweet, and overall it's just one of the best pop offerings of 2013. Perhaps don't think of it as a Paramore song, and look at it purely for the song itself. Maybe you'll see the magic, too.

HENRY F/ TAEMIN & KYUHYUN - "TRAP"

Chinese-Canadian pop star Henry, most known for being a member in boy band Super Junior M, made his solo debut this year with "Trap", an R&B-pop song detailing the complications of feeling like one can't get out of a troubled relationship. Featuring fellow band member Kyuhyun and also Taemin from SHINee, coupled with a really strong melody and piano compositions actually composed by Henry himself, the replay value is incredible. A few different versions of this song exist - chinese and english - but it's the korean version that reigns supreme. It might be odd but it should be noted that I find the ad-libs towards the end more addictive than the rest of the song.

Wynter has said that she wants to release her studio album before getting to the rest of the EPs, but she has said multiple times that the last two EPs are definitely being released. I'm really interested to see what she comes up with for her album, and I hope it comes out next year. I always forget that this will technically be her debut album, because the full album version of With the Music I Die was exclusive to Australia... the rest of the world only got the EP version.
