5 of my housemates are massively addicted to Applause.
When I wake up in the morning, I can hear them chant "I live for the Applause, Applause..." in the hallway. I can hear them singing in the bathroom, I can hear them hum the melodies and this has never happened during the Born This Way era.
A friend of mine in school also randomly texted me praising Applause (the last he did this was for Judas)
My sitting partner in school told me she saw this one picture of Gaga with make up smurged on her facs and thought it was artistic and beautiful but she didn't know what it was.
3 of my friends came up to me saying that the VMA performance was brilliant and I bet they liked it more than me.
All these people have never liked Gaga before and these praises didn't happen during the BTW era so I guess it's just s good indication that people are aware she is back and so far kinda loving the new stuff. Perhaps, people is at the transition mode now.

Yes. I'm not disappointed though, just underwhelmed as a member said earlier.

I understand her perfectly fine.
That's the problem.

I think she's just getting started.
Give her some time and then we'll discuss.

It depends on how you look at it..... whether you wanted her to succeed or fail.

I've been a fan of hers since 2008, I understood the concept but I still thought it was poorly executed. Some of y'all need to stop with the "you don't understand her art, it's too complex for your simple minds" explanations. Not only does it make you sound like a cliché little monster, you're not leaving any room for other Gaga fans to not always like her art.
And to answer the OP, the era has JUST started. Way too early to make a declaration on how good or bad her "comeback" (did she go anywhere?) is.

There's always one..
let me sit you down and explain something really quick
I never assumed that ALL her fans liked her art, not one sentence in my statement stated that, WHAT I did say without words being put in my mouth, was that her work regardless is made for her fans - I did say, "if your'e not her fan, you simply wouldn't understand the grandiose subtext behind it.... " which in no way states that ALL HER FANS loved her performance - when I speak I speak for myself, as should you.
To paraphrase the statement, I said, it's her art, expressive, not all art fans like everything put out by their artist... this new song coming up there's a strong likeliness that I am not going to like it too much but that's what I, as her fan have come to understand, it's HER art, not mine; let her do as she pleases.

So far.
Watching all the promo photos got me so excited, like I was stanning for her. But after Applause and the video was released, I realised that the photos have nothing to do with the era...Oh wait, she brought the chair to the GMA interview.
Hope she comes to her mind with the second single. Wish her all best.

As much as I love Applause, so far, this era has been very underwhelming.

Yes. Her lead single is alright, but her VMA performance really disappointed me.

The fact of the matter is, anybody with sense in their heads knew this was coming. There was simply no way GaGa was going to be pumping out the same kind of sales and press she was in 2009-2011. The novelty has worn off and music has shifted away from all the theatrics and shock-factor that was dominating 2-3 years ago.
The Monsters tried to act like she was going to have the biggest era of her career and keep the momentum but everyone else knew that was bull, hell even they probably knew that was a lie.

Her music, her show, her things are not for everybody - her performances are made for her fans, her shows, they're all made SOLELY for her fans - if you become a fan after the fact, good for you - but lets take for instance the VMA performance this year, if you're not her fan, you simply wouldn't understand the grandiose subtext behind it, you'd think it was sub-par and continue on with you overly simplistic view of what her art is - but if you know it's who she is where she came from and where's going, see under the mask - see the art for art and not a simplistic performance than hey all power to you -
I don't know, Gaga is an ARTIST, who happens to be a celebrity.
it's all subjective, like the David is just a statue of a dude for me, but for statue aficionados, it's GENIUS

We have 1 song in full, so you cannot decide really. I would say no though since I love "Applause" and ARTPOP seems great from what we have.

For instance, after seeing all that pics, I was expecting something new like Aura which sounds so clean and classy and she gave us generic Applause. I expected bright video like BR and she gave us messy video. I was expecting light colors and minimal outfit on the rc, she came in a big, black dress...

It's only disappointing if you expected more. Lady Gaga has been on the decline since "Alejandro," commercially speaking, and times have changed. I can't think of anyone who kept the same level of popularity for years. The monsters were the only ones who thought she would continue to slay like that. Pop is such revolving door of artists and styles. Personally, I have been bored of her, and I'm not even one of those nostalgic geeks who says "I miss the old Gaga." I'm even over that.

It's only disappointing if you were expecting Poker Face-type success again.
I'd say no. A "comeback" can't be defined by a lead single, anyway.
Compering her comeback to Katy's as well isn't really an accurate way to do it. Katy Perry come off of a very successful era, in which her latest song peaked at #2 and was released a little over a year before Roar. Gaga came off an underperforming era (relative to The Fame / Monster), in which her latest song peaked at #29 and was released a little under two years before Applause.
Taking that into account, it really should have been expected that Katy would outperform Gaga, at least in terms of lead single. The fact that after such a long break and a "flop" single, Gaga is still able to score a #4 hit single is incredible. Following singles and album success are a different thing, too.
