Because it's a good marketing tool for the market he's trying to hit. When your market is heavily stacked with kids ages 8-15, those fans have to rely on money/permission given to them by their parents, especially for concerts. By playing up the good boy/religious angle, parents are more likely to support the artist because they're seen as a "good influence".
