It's worth noting -- this is a room full of songwriters -- that it's okay to study [Firework], but it's a very well crafted lyric. We focus a lot on tracks because we make tracks, but at the end of the day those tracks would be nothing without that song. That's the key. The way she uses a very simple structure in the verse -- the verses could be straighter and simpler than you think. A lot of the great song writers have figured this out or do it instinctively.

The professional songwriters think her lyrics require much intelligence!

You could get away with a straighter melody than you think. She applies that here, she uses repetitive lines in the lyrics and she uses interesting metaphors. You know that it's building up to something. The lyric -- at least when I heard it the first time she sang it -- grabbed me right away. I thought it was interesting use of metaphor and a very very good strong melody.

More praise for her lyrics and real writing credits from one of the most prolific songwriting duos in Top 40 music!

Some of us simply doubt Katy's songwriting credits since she doesn't seem to have a signature style; her lyrics lack personality. They're so broad and generic, written to appeal to the lowest common denominator. Nothing to fume over.

Katy might have won a Grammy yet but her work gets recognized almost every year since she's been on the scene not only because of her unique studio voice but because of her input in her music. She might not be the best songwriter but at least she's relatable and can write a great melody and catchy chorus that makes America melt and fall in love with her as well as having the haters lusting over her wishing their faves were on her tracks.
