There really isn't a difference, though. You can't ignore one animal's pain in favor of another just because the population of the former's species is larger.
Is the killing of an elephant for the sake of it's leather "right?" Probably not. But I don't think it's any different from genetically altering animals for human consumption, a practice that people generally ignore. People are only bitching because it's an elephant. At least they're using the skin and not just the tusks.
