The only problem with 1D and The Wanted (The Wanted maybe) is that they are targeted to a younger audience and not the general public. The same audience as Justin Beiber, and some teen artists. If history proves right again, they won't be able to last. Very few artists have managed to shed the teen image and make it as an adult artist (MJ, Britney, Rihanna, etc). I'm not saying they can't but look at the Jonas Brothers, they're almost forgotten and that was less than 4 years since their peak.
I wholeheartedly agree that it's very hard for artists to shed a teen image and transition to adult (Rihanna really?)
But y'all need to seriously become aware of when an artist departs from making music willingly. The Jonas Brothers willingly separated to work on their own thing. It wasn't because they had an underperforming album, that still managed to sell 600k. I mean it could have partly been the reason, but they also wanted to do different things on their own. If it weren't for that underperforming album, they would have continued making music just for the sake of sales and would have ultimately been unhappy after going on for so long.
The Jonas Brothers aren't even the only example I could use.

The difference is that 1D has a very large fan base even before they came to the US. They appeal to a younger audience, but they are not their only fans. When they came to the US, they appeared to market them as a clean cut, poppy, children's boy band, but they really aren't. I don't know how they could reach out to other fans, but JB fans are not the same as 1D ones.
The Wanted is not a problem because they are not geared towards a young audience anyway.
I know the odds are against the good sistrens of One Direction but who knows what the future has for them. Maybe one of them (hopefully Zayn ) goes solo and becomes popular. Or maybe they'll mature their sound and survive like Take That has done for so many years in the UK. Or maybe they'll be completely forgotten 3 years from now, but I hope they won't be
Either way to go back on topic if you look at N Sync (that lasted 4-5 years) they used to dance relatively well and they are still forgotten (except for Justin Timberlake).
It was the end of an era in a way. Nsync and the Backstreet Boys broke up, they didn't fade away like New Kids on the Block from the early 90s. Nsync were bound to break up, Justin was taking all the leads and his label was pushing him to go solo by doing that. Not to forget he was with Britney and she was at the peak of her popularity, they broke up and the hype from the VMAs after the broke up increased his fame indirectly. Which is why Justin blew up. Nsync aren't forgotten in a way, they are remembered nostalgically. If they were to come together this instant it would make news.
I do feel like 1D will continue with their success, in the future but only in the UK. America is quick to forget.

Take That only lasted cause Gary Barlow and Robbie Williams are pop music geniuses. One Direction need to milk the hype as much as they can before they get too old.

That's it. I'm from the US, and they are marketed as a very clean-cut, preppy group. The Wanted on the other hand aren't they are more targeted to the late teens and 20s. 1D have to be clean cut here, or they would've never made it. Disney and Nickelodeon are their biggest push. The Wanted are pushed by MTV so you see the different marketing.
+1 I mean on XF alone, Alexandra was awesome at 19, Misha B too, as was Laura White, let's not bring up Jess Sanchez to prove the point...16!!! They've got better, but...dem vocals...Imagine if they get better, the material diversifies and they write too....

Right! It's sad, but I guess that's the way it is. Maybe they can branch out over the next few years. I'd like to see that. And yeah, Americans are quick to forget

You think they can. They are marketed to a youth audience, the only way to branch out is to lose them and change who they are. In others words they are stuck, its a catch-22 with them. They can change and lose fans, or stay the same and lose fans.

Jessica is not an every day event and you know it. Stop reaching.
I clearly said they weren't "exceptionally great" at singing, like Jessica is. Can't you read?

I didn't say they could, I said I hope they do. It's not changing who they are, but rather SHOWING who they are. The only reason they cleaned them up is because Americans aren't used to seeing boys like them. The British have a difference sense of humor, are more up and front with things, and can be more crude at times. They wouldn't be changing who they are at all. The way Americans see them now is a different way than how they actually are.

And wouldn't that hurt them in the end. They aren't being who they are, and any slip up could end their image in the US (Chris Brown), and have a sudden backlash. The main different between the US and UK is religion. And I won't get into religion but all I can say is. America is full of conservative religious folk, and five young boys acting how they do in the UK will have an uproar.

Um, the kind of Chris Brown bad is not what I was talking about

Disney? The only thing 1D has going with Disney is their songs get played on the radio channel.
