I don't really get where all her album sales are coming from. Americans are usually very slow on the uptake but 21 exploded right out the gate without RITD even being a hit yet.

I think enough people had heard RITD by that point, but Adele also had recognition in the US from Chasing Pavements, which even made its way into karaoke games, etc. I'm not sure what spurred the HUGE sales in the US other than that, but I think it's one of those albums that news gets out about quickly.

It wasn't even a slowburner, like say Jagged Little Pill and Come Away With Me, which both debuted on the outside of the top 100 on Billboard 200.

I think it started off well because she still had buzz left from her performance on SNL, which was the highest rated one ever if I'm not mistaken, and her two Grammy wins. "Hometown Glory," which made no impact in the U.S., was nominated for a Grammy among huge hits. That's my theory as to why 21 exploded so early in the game.

Her singles are sleeper hits. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if she performed Set Fire to the Rain at the Grammys and that makes it go #1.

In the lead up to the launch of '21' in the US she did some stellar TV promo (Letterman, ellen, kimmel, etc) but I guess no more than many 'rivals' have done. It's just that when Adele gets the TV promo opportunity she always kills it. Quality as opposed to quantity, I suppose. Viewers instantly connect with her,in other words. But mostly I think her massive success owes a lot to the cheapest and most effective promo there is - word of mouth recommendation.
