"Circus" sold more in the U.S. alone than "Femme" did worldwide in their respective first weeks. Sounds bad no matter how you look at it. But - I think it's still a great opening for a 7th album, especially given the state of the industry.

Both “Blackout” and “Circus” were released during holiday weeks. “Blackout” opened high based on Britney’s name alone, “Circus” was her media comeback, planned since September (magazine covers, performances, public appearances, the documentary…), and all the promo besides the Good Morning America performance was done prior to the release. In addition, she promoted worldwide too.
She promoted only in the US during the release week this time, which should help lower the second week drop. Not to mention the current economy and the fact that sales have drastically dropped (more than 50% according to 2010 reports.) She tried something different with the first single choice this time around (it packs a heavier and more aggressive beat than anything else on the charts right now and she experimented with more underground sounds,) and “Hold It Against Me” slightly underperformed.
I think her numbers are just OK, they're nothing impressive, but they're not bad at all.
