99 Souls feat. Destiny's Child & Brandy "The Girl Is Mine"
Who would've thought a Destiny's Child and Brandy (indirect) feat. would ever see the light of day? Even though neither of the parts had anything to do with this weird mix I love the result. Girl has always been one of my favorite DC songs and I'm glad it's finally getting the exposure it always deserved.
Matt Simons "Catch & Release"
There was a (very short) span of time when I thought this song would make it big and become the next crossover WW smash ala Waves (anyone remembers that?). I quickly got bored of it and never picked it back up again until I started making my yearend recap but it's still a cute laid back song.
Years & Years "Eyes Shut"
One of the very few 2015 late bloomers that were lucky enough to get a second mention this year. Many people argue this song should have never been released as a single but I think it's one of this band's best songs. It departs from their signature indie pop dance sound but it's a very strong ballad.
Clean Cut Kid "Pick Me Up"
One of the catchiest indie tracks of the year, it took me just one listen to fall in love with it. It stands out because unlike many other indie songs with very abstrack concepts and slow paced beats this one is very simple and upbeat, it just cheers you up and puts you in a good mood instantly.
Young the Giant "Something to Believe In"
After listening to this band's previous records I have to say I was expecting so much more from their comeback this year. Despite being a decent sized effort it really fell short compared to their previous lead single, it got old really fast and the video is nothing special. Maybe next time.
Foxes "Amazing"
Despite many efforts Foxes is yet to find herself a place among the current landscape of pop music. It's like she doesn't really belong there. This song was never meant to become a hit but I'm still thankful she managed to release it as a single it's one of my favorite from her underrated latest album.
Kaiser Chiefs "Parachute "
I came to realize I arrived way too late to this band's party. Just when I started getting into their music they radically changed their image and sound to something that sounds very...odd. As a pop music fan I don't really judge them cause I like it the result but it's like they blatanly sold out and I'm not surprised their fans hated it.
Bastille "Good Grief"
After a long ass break Bastille finally managed to release the follow up to their breakout era. I have to say this song didn't rub me the right way from the beginning, it's not that bad but it's definitely not the comeback single I was expecting from them and as expected it got old a little too fast.
Beyoncé "Hold Up"
Before I get anything thrown at me for placing her this low, I loved Lemonade as a whole. I just don't think any of the songs is good enough on its own. I think the whole visual experience she's been trying to push is artistically (and commercially) working for her but as a casual fan I wish she'd come back to traditional releases sometimes.
Calum Scott "Dancing On My Own"
I never really liked the original, in fact I think it's very obnoxious so never in a million years I would have listened to this song had I known it was a cover. I accidentally ran into it one day and I just love what they did to it, it's like it was written to sound like this.
Thanks for your comments.
