Earlier this year, I participated in an Ace Reject music rate featuring Barbra Streisand, Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, Diana Ross, Donna Summer, and Cher. At the time, Cher was the only one whose music I was truly familiar with. I also attempted to host a country music rate featuring Dolly Parton, Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette, and Loretta Lynn. That's over. It's cancelled. Nobody cared. But preparing to host that doomed rate gave me the chance to familiarize myself with Patsy Cline.
Note that in order to qualify for this list, a song has to be new to me this year. I listened to a lot of catalog music in 2016, but you won't be seeing any Madonna (as one example) on this list because I was only listening to songs that I was already familiar with.
The updates will come in sets of ten, one each day for the next five days.

About This Set
Grammys. Grammys everywhere! Both Alison Krauss songs appear on Album of the Year winning records, while "Please Read The Letter" also took home Record of the Year. U2's legendary smash "With or Without You" also comes from an AOTY winner. Barbra Streisand's songs "Woman in Love" and Pinocchio cover "I've Got No Strings" both appear on Grammy-winning albums. Aretha Franklin won a Grammy for "Freeway of Love"—and also took one home for her rendition of the Dionne Warwick song that appears here!
But Grammys aren't everything, as Dolly Parton proves with her two classics. Kesha's mom helped write the beautiful "Old Flames (Can't Hold A Candle To You)," while "The Bridge" is famous for its abrupt ending in the midst of the song's bridge. Babs slays "I've Got Not Strings," which builds into a bit of a showstopper, while her final #1 hit "Woman in Love" (which she apparently doesn't care for) really strikes a mood. U2's first #1 hit "With or Without You" frequently appears in lists of the greatest songs of all time, but it isn't my favorite single from The Joshua Tree (#spoiler). The rest are nice too!
