She wasn't local guys! She used to be such a force circa 1989-1998. After "velvet Rope" though the downfall was progressive and steady! Even at those years nevertheless Madonna had more impact. If I was telling my classmates in 1990 "hey guys Wanna hear the new song by Madonna or by Janet?" Everyone would answer Madonna. Janet was selling more at that time? yes! No, that's not the response because that Stevie fan is just joking and y'all STILL don't get it after all this time.

The actual response is that, even though her biggest market has always been the US, she still has had success all over the world. Huge albums, dozens of hit singles (15 year old chavs saying they don't know her but she has 40 singles reaching the top 40 in the UK (33 top 20, 17 top 10) is not a fluke, these aren't nonsense one-click iTunes stats, but legit single sales), and numerous cancelled tour dates in many other markets. Your age group not being aware of that doesn't detract from it.
