Not lies. CG barely outsold it, HSS was leading up until this week but since it's been discounted it surged up iTunes. And yes the labels can do whatever they want, but that doesn't change the fact they needed to lower their prices to remain competitive and steal this achievement.

It was outselling it as of 3 weeks ago, BEFORE they discounted it.
Actually it only pulled ahead last week, which is when it went on sale.

"California Gurls" by Katy Perry featuring Snoop Dogg sold 115K copies this week, enabling it to pull back ahead of Train's "Hey, Soul Sister" (which sold 64K this week) as the song that has sold the most digital copies in 2010. "California Gurls" has a lead of 41,000 copies. Will that lead hold up for one more week or will Train pull ahead again? Check back next week and find out.
While Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream" album finishes 2010 as the 14th biggest-selling overall album (997,000), she does claim the top-selling digital song of the year, as her former Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 "California Gurls" moved 4.40 million downloads. Perry has three of the 40 top-selling songs of last year, as "Teenage Dream" is No. 12 (3.01 million) and "Firework" is No. 28 (2.33 million).
HSS only passed CG after Train did massive promo in the last week of November. Even if CG hadn't been discounted I still think it would have come out ahead (albeit, just barely).
