The thing is, singles are used as promotional tools to sell an album. There's obviously some disconnect when an artist has a several week number 1, yet can't sell the parent album. It indicates a lack of interest and a lack of respect for the artist.

If an artist can sell an album without any sort of hit single, it suggests that the artist has respect from music-buyers and a loyal fanbase who have come to expect quality albums.

Now, if you can have a hit single and sell a hell of a lot of albums, such as Adele, that's where you want to be. The artist has a larger outreach, whilst also maintaining their core fanbase.

i don't think it's a shame to admit that some need hits to sell and some don't. and i'm not a damn hater cause i am a huge Rihanna fan too (which doesn't mean her sales would be horrid if she hadn't had a hit)

Most of the sales were due to "21"'s huge success. People started to discover ADELE and started purchasing the old material.

Adele had already sold a lot of albums before RITD became a hit. Not as much as she has now, but more than many artists I could name.

We are not in 1999, single are not only meant to sell albums, they are meant to be successful on their own and make profit, it has been that way since the digital era started around 10 years ago

well i am huge rih fan and was one of the few who actually supported her throughout the whole FFS/BBHMM/Ao2 phase and also went through the whole diary experience etc etc. also went to two concerts and will be going to the third in August.

Not when some artists have been the last few years releasing songs without putting them in an album, because they make more money that way.

And it will happen even more now with streaming taking off. Albums are not the future of the music industry

It's just not true. Albums will always make more money than singles, especially with regards to Adele and Bey.

I mean, Lemonade has probably made 10 times more than the 9 week number 1 single work.
