I think the reason why these "Official Threads" came to be in the first place was because some members like Xtian<3Britney kept posting 10-15 news articles a day on the same artist.

So if we were to revert back to the old way, the rules on what is considered newsworthy should be clearly stated. i.e no gossip, rumors and other tabloid stories. All that stuff can go into the "Social Group" while the Main Music forum is kept for real news on albums/singles etc.

Yeah, in the past, we've had problems getting people to understand what "news" means... which led to the "Main Music Forum" (instead of "Music News & Charts") and all these official-ish threads in the first place.

It would just have to be aggressively moderated, that's the thing. Right now no one needs to moderate it.

That's because the comments are actually already approved by default.

You need to hit the little checkboxes on the comments before selecting anything from the drop-down menu. After you hit the checkboxes, then you can "approve" or "unapprove" the comments.

Honestly I don't really have a problem with that, and I can't speak for the other moderators but I think we could handle it. I pay attention to that forum more than any other so I think I'd pick up on the out-of-place threads.

Well then that works for me. I'm up for trying it out. If anything, it'll kinda force people to use these Fan Group things! Any other opinions?

It looks great. I'm okay with getting rid of official threads.

Groups seem like a good idea as a replacement, although I need to see them more active to decide whether they're fine like this or need some polishing.

Just noticed you tweaked the "Blogs" button at the top. I thought you intended to have a fast way to get to the blogs as well as some options on the down arrow, but I guess that was a glitch?

Concerning the Social Groups. It seems a little too hidden away right now to take off as the official place for artist discussion. Maybe give it some exposure? Not sure where you could, as the top bar seems pretty packed but maybe on the main menu under Community.

And good we're 3/3 staff so far with the "kill all official threads" idea.

I definitely agree with Kworb. Groups sound like a better idea of getting the fans together rather than having the official threads cluttering at the top of the main music forum.

As for killing the official threads... It doesn't seem like a good idea at all. We have lots of active official threads right now and they're zipping lots of news and updates. Getting rid of the official thread will lead into an explosion of updates of same artists on the main forum. I also don't understand how the social groups can turn into an artist discussion or "let's continue our britney 'radar' discussion over the group" LMAO. It doesn't make sense to me.

My suggestion?

Keep the official threads. The first post in each official thread will be updated with a link to where the last update is posted. People will enter the first page on the thread, click over the link, it will take them to the "updated news"... the new discussion starts from there. Just like old school with an extra click. I've already implemented my idea on my "Madonna" thread for a demonstration.

P.S: That means the thread title should redirect to the first page/post, not the last page as it is now.

I don't know, Mazen's idea sounds good but it seems a bit of a hassle, and I doubt people who aren't as organized as he is would be able to run threads that way. I think most "news" about Madonna (to use a recent example) could be separated to a general Hard Candy thread and threads for the single(s). Things like the album reaching #1 on Amazon can just be posted in the thread, it doesn't need to be a highlighted news item. I think that's how the music forum used to work in the old days anyway.

The old way was best though, it'll be tough to find a good alternative.
