#22 - Girl on Fire (Alicia Keys)
Now this may not come as a surprise, but I wasn’t expecting much from Alicia this year. Alicia is one of the many artists who have this horrid habit of doing the same exact thing on every album; her pattern, a strong woman anthem, a soulful ballad, and a hood-inspired jam. Now, this is not to say her pattern isn’t bad, it’s just the same thing over and over again can get not only repetitive but boring. But, this album is not, in the least, a bad album. It’s classic Alicia, and it’s somewhat new Alicia. Just songs like “Brand New Me”, “New Day” and “Limitedless” are somewhat of a stretch to describe this album. But the standouts like “Fire We Make”, the slow jam duet with Maxwell; “When It’s All Over”, an afro-funk/electronic banger about having love at the end of it all; and the title song and first single, “Girl on Fire”; make this album a welcome addition to Alicia’s ever-growing discography.
