Here it is, the final installment of my top 120 singles of 2005! Let's take a look at what the TC 10 stats machine has in store for the top 5...
5. Nine Inch Nails - Only (88 points)
This surprisingly good follow-up single from Nine Inch Nails takes the #5 spot on my list. Starting off calm and with a catchy loop, Trent sings and talks his way through a few verses in amazing style and with wonderfully dark lyrics, leading up to the final choruses which are some of the most powerful I've heard. If this song is any indication, Nine Inch Nails are far from over -- this is some of their best work.
4. Franz Ferdinand - Do You Want To (90 points)
After hearing their incredible first album, I wondered if it would even be possible for Franz Ferdinand to come up with anything better. The thought was nearly inconceivable, but they pulled it off. This first single from their newest album, You Could Have It So Much Better, was a great way to kick off the album and get everyone ready for the rest of their new material which is even better.
3. Beck - E-Pro (91 points)
Earlier we saw Guero take the title of my favorite album of 2005, and now Beck also has the #3 single according to the stats machine. I don't really know how to describe E-Pro except to say that I knew it would easily be one of the best songs of the year since I first heard it way back in January. In addition to being simply a great song, it also served as a signal to all of us that Beck is at his best, most creative and innovative point ever.
1. Fiona Apple - O' Sailor (97 points)
From the very first leaked copies of Fiona Apple's newest album, it was clear right away that her Extraordinary Machine is indeed extraordinary. The album came as a wonderful surprise, and the final release of the album also came with a surprise of its own -- this amazing version of O' Sailor. It exhibits more true emotion and power than many other songs combined, all while staying within the realm of calmness and simplicity in which Fiona Apple presents all of her work. As such, it did extremely well during its run on my personal countdown. O' Sailor is tied for my #1 single of 2005.
1. Foo Fighters - Best Of You (97 points)
After the Foo Fighters' previous album, One By One, I thought they were on their way down and that they may never create anything as good as their previous work ever again. Their excellent album released this year, In Your Honor, proved me wrong, and the song that started at all was this one. The energy, genuine quality, and emotion expressed in Best Of You is stunning. The excitement surrounding a true return of the Foos, and the excellence of the song itself, led it to a great run on my personal countdown, which equaled that of O' Sailor exactly. Best Of You is tied for my #1 single of 2005.
That's it! Thanks to everyone who replied to this thread and supported my list of top 120 singles and top 10 albums of 2005.
